In our very hot summer in NYC, we've had many days of 90° & above. My black [yes, hot] MKT cools down OK most days, but when we got those 97-103° days, it never got very cool inside when driving in the sun. My brown Mercury Mariner Hybrid was similar. When very muggy, I choose recirculate and this helps a lot. I don't use the auto climate control much except for the 1st few blocks, or after the interior is fairly cool, due to the fan noise, but rather use the manual fan controls. The MKT has a nice feature of all the windows simultaneously rolling down when the fob's unlock button is held down - this helps in cooling.
I do wish the sunroof could be cracked open while the inside cover is kept mostly closed - this helped my Mariner stay much cooler when parked in the sun.
