I'm scared. I haven't bought a new truck since 1998, when I ordered my 99 F-150. (I know, I know...but it was a sweet spot kind of thing...paid off, runs great, salesmen are putzs in Texas, even with Z-plan pricing)
Here's our story in a nutshell:
Just a quick intro, I'm a life long Ford driver, started with a *gasp* Pinto (yup, lived to tell the tale!) then 2 Escorts to get through the college years, then a 95 F-150 5.0 which was replaced by a leased 97 F-150 Triton V8, and then (and still!) a 99 F-150 TritonV8.
99 is my rock. Haul hay with it, haul a$$ down the freeway. Haul the horse to shows, we're (Me and my truck!) always going somewhere. To that end, 99 now has 298,560 miles on it.Still gets 17mpg, doing 70 on the freeway. Have rebuilt the transmission once last April. Tires and brakes and religious oil changes and the truck has been very very good to me.
The trailer weighs 2800 empty and the horses probably match that. It handles the job breezily.
The hay? Wow, what an adventure. 16' flatbed, no brakes, loaded with 80 bales of hay (60lbs each) and then another 30 in the bed. Truck handles it fine, it's me who has the sh!t fit when idiots cut me off and think I can stop in 5'. But I digress.
With the truck being 13 (14?) years old, and with "that" many miles, I'm starting to get chicken about towing the horse trailer with it. I worry about crap like metal fatigue, like something terrible happening in the front end at 65mph with the trailer and a tragedy occuring. No, the truck rides awesome, everything is well maintained. The only "thing" is when I'm going 70-75mph on the freeway, when I come off the accelerator, there is a bit of roaring, and Dad said it sounds like bad baffle. MPG hasn't suffered, mechanic isn't concerned...
So, I have 85% convinced myself it is time for a new F-150. First was the mental discussion on EcoBoost or V8.
Then, as time ticked on, I thought, "Hmm...I could really get a deal on a 2011, since 2013s are just on the horizon.
Then, I get Ford X Plan, so does the model year really matter?
Now, I'm reading about all the TSBs for the 2011s, haven't delved into to the TSBs for the 2012s. I'm growing feathers and starting to chicken out.
I'm looking to you, (if you've read this far!) for suggestions and guidance.
Sign me,
Uncertain in DFW

ETA: once upon a time I worked for Tower Automotive (Edgewood Tool and Manufacturing) for about 10 years, and got some awesome in house training at Norfolk Assy and Michigan Truck. Of course it helped that I lived a mile from Michigan Truck And my grandfather was a clay model designer for the 57 T-Bird, so it's fair to say it's in my blood.
