  1. Not having counted the instances, but having been immersed in the conversations and their inflections, I assert that you cannot fairly judge him for accusing others of racism. It was plainly a reaction to either a poster here, a politician, a celebrity or other personality who made the initial accusation.

But, if you skim the surface without the background, you would come up with such a misrepresentation.

Isn't everyone's use of the term a reaction to such? How do you differentiate between good and bad reactions? The likely answer is that you consider those reactions that are like yours as good and those not are bad. So he could react to opinions and actions he disagreed with by using that term but others could not. Is this close?

  2.

That's not even remotely the same thing. It was a Firestone tire problem caused by the owner running the tire pressure below factory recommendations AND failing to control the vehicle when the tire did blow out by overreacting.

I realize Ford had to respond to it just from a PR standpoint but that's different than hiding or ignoring a known safety defect. Maybe the cruise control fires would be a better example although I don't know the history of events on that one.

I disagree. The tire issue is similar enough given the bad press, the fact that Ford made the recommendation to run the tires at the lower pressure and that they had a inkling of possible tire failure. In the midst of all that, Ford took a very similar route as GM did, trying to get it's employees to frame the issue. There were even posters in the admin building suggesting how to talk to neighbors about the issue, along with the classes.

Didn't mean to sound short but just got in from the pub.

  3. I personally have found it much more enjoyable. We are still debating the same topics but the debate is honest and devoid of unneeded accusations of being a racist or some such nonsense just because we don't agree with a certain person's point of view.

When, as a new poster, you use the new content tab it takes you all the back to the start of a thread. I have to say after skimming my way through them, it seems that you leveled that very same accusation quite a few times yourself. How many times do you think you called others here racist because they didn't agree with your point of view? Perhaps more times than you would be happy to admit and enough that you shouldn't feel comfortable remarking about people calling others racist. It seems that the conversation to you is more honest because you feel among like minded people as evidenced by the references to a removed member. One always feels more open when the opposition has been removed and they can self-segregate.

  4. The question is whether this is a "GM problem," or an industry-wide problem, and GM is just the first one with a turn in the hot seat.

Ford had it's turn in the barrel back with the Explorer tires. We even had a training class about the issue. Admittedly ours wasn't as bad as this but I recall having to attend a class reaffirming our commitment to quality and getting some talking points about it.

  5. There is product placement and corporate logos everywhere. It may not be noticed when it's there all the time, but if Ford pulls out of sponsorship/involvement, their will be eyeballs seeing GM, Toyota and the other makes....but no one will be thinking of Ford. The old adage was that NASCAR was a proving ground for new technology and product development that leads to innovation in retail auto sales. Whether that is/was true......Ford would not be able make that assertion.

NASCAR fans are the most loyal fans, as far as I have ever known. There may not be as many as NBA or NFL fans, but there is little doubt they spend their money on their driver and their sponsors. Not so much for the sports teams.

Do you feel think that the tube frame rear wheel drive stock car is selling the front wheel drive Fusion? Are they going to stop buying Mustangs or F-150's because of it?

  6. I think you meant 'couldn't care less.' Unfortunately, I have been a Ford fan for over 50 yrs and always enjoyed the American Car companies racing each other. Since France Jr brought in the Japanese Toyota's, the patriotism and true American Spirit is gone. I predict in the next few years it will be mostly Toyota's with big sponsors support like Fed Ex and Home Depot running the circuit.

The American car companies haven't raced each other in years. There's not one Ford, Chevy or Dodge on those tracks.

  7. So it looks like the fix is too replace the housing with one that either drains better or has some method of allowing a little outside air in to evaporate the moisture while not running. I'm wondering if it isn't a "in house" fix such as drilling or widening a hole.

Could incentives have played a part?

    Absolutely.

More likely higher taxes and a less business friendly environment from a state all about environment.

Start with right-to-work laws in southern states that have limited unionization and thus labor costs. Just 4.8% of workers in Texas and 6.1% in Tennessee belong to a union compared to 16.4% in California. Real estate is also cheaper in the South due to less restrictive zoning and environmental regulations, and taxes are lower. According to the Tax Foundation, the state-local tax burden is more than 50% higher in California than in Tennessee and Texas, which don't levy a personal income tax. California's top 13.3% marginal rate is the highest in the country.

Understanding where you're coming, I just don't see this move as being one away from these issues in California. Toyota is also closing a plant in northern Kentucky, sending 1,000 of it's jobs to Texas and 600 to Michigan as part of the consolidation. To me it seems that they were looking to consolidate and Perry offered them the biggest incentives.

  9. You could say that about any cost of business though. It would be worse if it was a tax on all companies because then everyone would simply raise their costs accordingly and the consumer would end up paying for it, not the companies.

Again I agree with your point. I don't have the answer, just a worry that fines aren't the best way.
