  4. Ford Begins Taking Orders for C-MAX Hybrid – America’s Most Affordable, Fuel-Efficient Hybrid Utility Vehicle • Ford dealers are now taking orders for the Ford C-MAX Hybrid, which will be more affordable than Toyota Prius v while achieving better fuel economy • Class-exclusive technologies include hands-free liftgate, active park assist for easier parallel parking and next-generation SmartGauge® with EcoGuide to help customers increase their fuel economy • C-MAX will launch this fall as part of Ford’s power of choice strategy to deliver leading fuel economy across its lineup while tripling electrified vehicle production capacity by 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid Forum – Ford dealers are starting to place orders for America’s most affordable and fuel-efficient hybrid utility vehicle – the 2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid – with innovative technologies such as a hands-free liftgate, spaciousness for five passengers and cargo as well as the fun-to-drive character shared with well-handling cars including Ford Focus. The C-MAX is a compact hybrid utility vehicle and the company’s first dedicated line of hybrids. The 2013 C-MAX Hybrid will be available this fall with a base price of $25,995 – approximately $500 lower than the Toyota Prius v’s base price. The C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid will follow later this year with better electric-mode fuel economy and overall driving range than the Prius plug-in hybrid. “C-MAX Hybrid offers better fuel economy, performance, technology and functionality than Prius v – and C-MAX Hybrid customers will pay less at the dealership and at the pump,” said Ken Czubay, vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. “Ford is delivering the power of choice for leading fuel economy across its lineup – from EcoBoost to electrified vehicles – because customers increasingly want to save money at the pump, even as gas prices rise over time.” The C-MAX Hybrid blends fuel economy with performance, with projected best-in-class horsepower and torque along with Ford’s third-generation powersplit technology that allows for higher speed while in electric mode than Toyota Prius v. C-MAX Hybrid benefits from 20 years of research and innovation behind the software and hardware technology driving it, with many of Ford’s almost 500 hybrid vehicle-related patents contained within. That means that along with SYNC® with MyFord Touch®, drivers get class-exclusive features like hands-free liftgate (offering hands-free cargo access with a simple kicking motion), SmartGauge® with EcoGuide, regenerative braking and an advanced lithium-ion (li-ion) battery pack that is being used for the first time in a Ford hybrid. C-MAX Hybrid – being built on Ford’s global C-segment platform – also benefits from a proven design and nameplate with more than 156,000 units of the gasoline version sold in Europe since its 2010 launch. Room to move C-MAX Hybrid is a compact hybrid utility vehicle jam-packed with features and room for five people and cargo. The vehicle has a high roofline (63.9 inches) offering ample interior space and flexibility. C-MAX Hybrid offers 99.7 cubic feet of passenger space compared with 97 cubic feet in Prius v. The spacious C-MAX Hybrid also provides greater headroom in both front and rear seats than Prius v (41/39.4 inches vs. 39.6/38.6 inches). For cargo, C-MAX Hybrid has 60/40 split-fold rear seats that easily fold flat with 54.3 cubic feet of space behind the first row and 24.5 cubic feet behind the second row. Tech-savvy C-MAX Hybrid features the company’s innovative hands-free liftgate, allowing for quick and easy access to the cargo area without messing with keys. A gentle kicking motion under the rear bumper opens the liftgate when used in combination with a key fob the user keeps in his or her pocket or purse that tells the car it’s OK to engage. The same motion can close the liftgate. The vehicle also features the newest version of MyFord Touch to help inform, enlighten, engage and empower drivers. MyFord Touch offers multiple ways for customers to manage and control their phone, navigation, entertainment and climate functions through voice commands, menus accessed through controls on the steering wheel, touch screens, buttons or knobs. C-MAX Hybrid also offers the next generation of SmartGauge with EcoGuide. Designed to help drivers get the most from the C-MAX Hybrid, information such as instantaneous fuel economy can be displayed on the left cluster to help drivers more closely monitor how their driving behavior affects the vehicle’s efficiency. The left cluster also shows Brake Coach, a feature that helps drivers optimize their use of the braking system so that driving range can be enhanced through proper braking techniques. In the right cluster, redesigned imagery of green leaves shows overall driving efficiency – as drivers improve their efficient driving, they are rewarded with more leaves. Quality and ingenuity The 2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid is new, but its software and hardware technology have been evolving for nearly two decades. C-MAX Hybrid is powered through the combination of a gasoline engine and a battery-driven electric motor. When powered by gasoline, the C-MAX Hybrid uses the all-new 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine – a powerful and fuel-efficient engine and among the most advanced non-turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains Ford has ever offered. The electric motor of the C-MAX Hybrid is powered by an advanced li-ion battery system designed to maximize use of common, high-quality components, such as control board hardware that has proven field performance in Ford’s critically acclaimed hybrid vehicles. C-MAX Hybrid also offers Ford’s next-generation powersplit architecture that allows the electric motor and gasoline-powered engine to work together or separately to maximize efficiency. The engine also can operate independently of vehicle speed, charging the batteries or providing power to the wheels as needed. The motor alone can provide sufficient power to the wheels in low-speed, low-load conditions and work with the engine at higher speeds. In the C-MAX Hybrid, the li-ion battery pack is recharged when the gasoline engine is in operation. Further, the regenerative braking system can recapture more than 95 percent of the braking energy that would otherwise be lost, and is able to use that power to help charge the battery. C-MAX Hybrid requires no plug-in charging. Made in U.S.A. C-MAX Hybrid is being produced at Ford’s Wayne, Mich.-based Michigan Assembly Plant alongside Focus, Focus Electric and Focus ST. More information about MAP can be found online here. It is one of five electrified vehicles Ford plans to produce in North America in 2012. Advanced technology such as available SYNC® with MyFord Touch® will also be available for Focus ST, along with a Sony® Audio System, HD Radio™ and 10-speaker surround sound.
  7. Trend-Spotting on a Global Scale; How Ford Designers Tailored All-New Kuga to Suit Customers Worldwide Ford design team builds cross-continental appeal into all-new Kuga by studying differing demands of customers from around the world Ford experts employ colour, design and spatial solutions that reconcile differing global preferences; for lighter interior colours in Asia but darker ones in Europe; for larger vehicles in North America but more compact ones in Europe Everything from climbing shoes to furnishings provide inspiration for broad trim and colour palettes that are then tailored to suit regional tastes and demands Ford Kuga. FORD ESCAPE FORUM– Ford designers employed trend-spotting on a global scale to ensure the all-new Kuga meets the needs of the customers – wherever they are in the world. Ford experts identified the varied and often conflicting worldwide tastes to deliver cross-continental appeal for the company’s first global compact SUV. This included reconciling the popularity of larger vehicles in North America with a European preference for more compact cars; and accommodating the popularity of lighter interior materials in Asia with a tendency for European buyers to go for darker shades. It also meant employing colour, design and spatial solutions to create the finished product as well as ensuring a degree of market-specific customization. The inspiration for trim and colour palettes came from sources as diverse as climbing shoes, make-up, jewellery and furnishings. Models are then offered on a regional basis to ensure the design and colours correspond to customer demand. “Great design can turn an object that you need to have, into an object you love,” said Chris Bird, design director, Ford of Europe, who is responsible for colour, material and vehicle personalisation. “That is why we put so much thought and feeling into cars like Kuga, making them appealing and relevant no matter where our customers are. “For example, size-perception is different in each region,” he added. “More customers in Europe and Asia now choose compact SUVs as an alternative to conventional niche products like coupes. In North America there is a growing trend to downsize, but our customers there still want to combine style and space, so it’s important to get that balance. “We made this work by collaborating closely with our engineering colleagues on details including getting the size of the wheels just right and incorporating Ford’s kinetic design in the exterior dimensions.” The positive impact of a global approach can be seen from the increased focus on the experience of rear seat passengers, directly influenced by the discovery that smaller vehicles are used more for chauffeuring in China than in Europe and North America. Colour preference too is a source of regional difference.'' In Europe and other global markets, the Escape is marketed as the Ford Kuga. “In Asia, lighter interiors are more desirable,” said Ulrike Dahm, colour and trim supervisor, Ford of Europe, who specialises in Asian markets. “Many people live in huge cities where space is at a premium, so having a light and airy interior is seen as luxurious. In Europe, colours and trim take a lot of influence from the tech industry and are generally darker. Gloss black is a popular choice.” The design team has to ensure colour and trim palettes are broad enough to meet regional tastes, fit Ford’s design DNA, and are concise enough to be production and cost efficient. But this is no barrier to creativity. “Influences for colours and materials come from all sources, from fashion and furnishings to make-up and jewellery,” said Serife Celebi, colour and material design supervisor, Ford of Europe. “I always talk about trainers, but if you look at the textures and colours used in climbing shoes, they’re really fantastic.” All-new Ford Kuga will launch with a global colour called Ginger Ale, a subtle green hue to reflect its active outdoor capabilities, but with rich, sophisticated tones to harmonise with the slick urban environment where many models will find a home. “Choosing the right colours is crucial, wherever the car is being sold,” Celebi said. “Ginger Ale is stylish enough to suit urban landscapes across the world and still have a playful edge. Developing colours that suit the character of a vehicle is much like knowing what colours suit your body shape.” The Kuga’s sleek new silhouette has seen Ford respond to awareness customers around the world are becoming both more demanding and more aware of design. Erika Tsubaki, design supervisor, Ford of Europe, ensures the company identifies and responds to changes in behaviour by acting as a “trend scout”. “Customers everywhere are more design-savvy now and recognize the importance of a car that looks more aerodynamic and efficient,” said Tsubaki. “But they’re not just satisfied with ‘good enough’. It has to be stylish as well as affordable. Independent of region, the car must also fulfill the purposes that they need it to.”
  8. Ford Focus Electric Review Steven Ewing / Auto Blog Ford will launch the Focus Electric in three waves, beginning with key areas like New York and California first, with all markets being able to take delivery by the end of the year. The all-electric Focus is priced at $39,995, including $795 for destination, which means that after the maximum $7,500 federal tax credit, you're looking at a base price of $32,495. Yes, that's $3,945 more than the base price of a 2012 Nissan Leaf, but Ford believes the added interior space, performance and quicker charging time is worth the price. Perhaps the biggest win for the Electric is that it largely acts the same as any Focus you'll find at a Ford dealer – it's comfortable, nicely appointed, handsome and quite engaging to drive. It's the EV incognito, and in a world where electric vehicles are still slowly gaining traction, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Read more here. Ford Focus Electric Forums
  9. 2013 Ford Escape Review: AutoBlog Auto Blog / Steven Ewing In the music industry, a band's third album is typically make-or-break. You start with the debut album, introducing the general public to the band's polished works, then comes the sophomore record, which proves whether or not the band can keep its fan base happy and gain more traction in the music scene. But the third album must show if that band's sound and style has a good enough mix of individual flare and mainstream appeal to keep them successful in the long-run. If you think about it, the same can be said about the automotive landscape, and for the purpose of this review, the Ford Escape. The first-generation Escape, launched in 2000 as a 2001 model, entered during a time when small SUVs and "cute-utes" were booming. The redesigned 2008 Escape built upon the first model's success, and now, as the curtain is about to close on that ruggedly handsome, boxy Escape, this new third-generation model has some mighty big shoes to fill. 10. Ford Focus Battery Is Third of Electric Car Cost Mike Ramsey / WSJ One of the auto industry's most closely guarded secrets—the enormous cost of batteries for electric cars—has spilled out. Speaking at a forum on green technology on Monday, Ford Motor Co.Chief Executive Alan Mulally indicated battery packs for the company's Focus electric car costs between $12,000 and $15,000 apiece. "They're around $12,000 to $15,000 [a battery]" for a type of car that normally sells for about $22,000, he continued, referring to the price of a gasoline-powered Focus. "So, you can see why the economics are what they are." READ MORE HERE
  11. Ford’s First Global Performance Car, Focus ST, Brings Power-Packed Performance and Stylish Comfort to China All-new Ford Focus ST brings the Sport Technologies badge to customers worldwide for the first time, offering that blend of refinement and performance for which ST is renowned Focus ST is Ford’s first performance car in China and will be available in more than 40 markets including U.S., Canada, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and 15 European countries The Ford Global Performance Vehicles Group is responsible for the engineering of the Focus ST Ford Focus ST Forum – For the first time ever, Chinese drivers will be able to own a Ford performance car previously unavailable in this country. Making its debut in Asia at 2012 Auto China, the Tangerine Scream Focus ST is another of the 15 new vehicles that Ford has promised to introduce in the country by mid-decade. The all-new Focus ST is Ford’s first truly global performance car, building on the heritage of previous Focus ST models in Europe and giving drivers around the world the opportunity to share the exhilarating performance, excellent handling, addictive sound and sporty design Ford’s ST badge represents. With innovative technologies throughout, the Focus ST will be highly fuel efficient too. The Focus ST was developed along Ford’s core DNA for future global performance cars. The attributes for steering, driving dynamics, sound quality and power enhancements were defined by the Global Performance Vehicles group, along with input from Asia. These DNA attributes can be seen in Focus ST’s aggressively enhanced front and rear bumpers, the addition of a rear spoiler and side skirts, as well as the specially tuned chassis and engine that deliver a truly sporty experience combined with a high level of refinement “The new Focus ST is a really exciting car for Ford, being the first performance model to build upon the design and technology strengths of our One Ford strategy,” said Nigel Harris, vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford Motor China. “It’s a car built for driving enthusiasts around the world – and in China – and they will not be disappointed.” Performance meets efficiency under the hood Focus ST is powered by the 2.0-litre Ford EcoBoost™ engine, which offers an uncompromising mix of performance and efficiency. Ford’s lightweight, all-aluminium EcoBoost engines provide the power of a larger engine in a fuel-efficient smaller displacement, leveraging three key technologies. High-pressure direct injection, low-inertia turbocharging and twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) create an advanced combustion system that brings new levels of performance and fuel efficiency, as well as reduced CO2 emissions. Ford developed a 184 kW high-output derivative of the 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine for Focus ST, which delivers strong torque levels in a broad, flat torque curve peaking at 360 Nm. The responsive torque output, a trademark of EcoBoost engines, is maintained despite the impressive peak figures. This is the first time Ford has used a Ford EcoBoost engine in a high-performance model. Drivers will have a lot of power and torque at their disposal throughout the rev range. For everyday driving, though, the characteristics of this car will let them drive in a more fuel-efficient way than previously, which is an essential part of the ST’s DNA. Mated to the 2.0-litre engine is a six-speed manual transmission, which has specially revised gearing to produce the maximum punch from each throw of the gearshift. Significant attention was paid to ensure the ratio of sixth gear was perfectly in tune with the Focus ST, giving the driver optimum performance while remaining long enough to help maintain excellent fuel economy on longer runs. Ford sound engineers also gave the engine a fantastic note by reworking the famed sound symposer, first found on the previous Focus ST and subsequently employed on European Focus RS and RS500 models. Thrilling driving dynamics Incredible driving dynamics are at the heart of the Focus ST. Innovation and technology combine to create a chassis capable of exceeding the expectations of even the most demanding enthusiast, while giving novice drivers an unforgettable experience. From the driver’s seat, customers will experience the newly developed Ford sport steering system. This variable-ratio steering rack is designed to increase the agility of the Focus ST on winding roads yet still inspire the same high-speed confidence. The unique system makes steering less sensitive when driving in a straight line but increases the sensitivity during cornering. Drivers can keep their hands firmly on the steering wheel through tight hairpins, maximizing their control over the car. It also has benefits in slow-speed situations such as tight parking manoeuvres, with less input needed from the driver to direct the car into the space. Focus ST’s electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) is also enhanced with Ford’s torque steer compensation. More aggressive tuning of the torque steer compensation allows drivers to accelerate at full throttle yet still find grip on roads with uneven surfaces. The system detects the torque steer that those conditions can create and communicates with the EPAS software, which then counteracts the effect to virtually eliminate the sensation for the driver. Further enhancements have been made to the Focus ST’s Electronic Stability Program (ESP), with emphasis placed on driver enjoyment. Drivers will have three modes to choose from according to weather and road conditions or simply to match the driver’s desire for help from additional driving aids. To help tackle corners, Focus ST is equipped with a tuned version of the Torque Vectoring Control found on the new Focus. The Focus ST’s Enhanced Torque Vectoring Control applies steering pressure more aggressively and also adds cornering control, which applies torque to create a yaw effect based on the car’s understeer, both in power-on and power-off conditions. Working in harmony with the advanced driver-assistance features is the finely tuned suspension setup of the new Focus ST. Upgraded shock absorbers and springs lower the ST chassis for a more aggressive stance while the centre of gravity is brought closer to the road, which aids precise cornering. The rear suspension has been revised with a number of new parts developed specifically for Focus ST. Key components are the uprated suspension knuckles and an all-new anti-roll bar design, both the result of the development team’s desire to give drivers an outstanding amount of feedback and control. Bold and muscular through and through In China the new Focus ST will be available as a five-door model. From the striking one-piece design interpretation of Ford’s signature trapezoidal grille at the front, through the sculpted side skirts and dynamic rear bumper with prominent diffuser-style vents in the lower fascia, Focus ST’s design adds aggression and aerodynamic stability. The highly effective roof spoiler is optimized to deliver improved high-speed stability and reduced drag while the unique centre-exit exhaust sports a tailpipe design influenced by the exclusive hexagonal mesh of the front bumper. The well-recognised Focus ST style extends to the iconic Y-shaped alloy wheels. Wrapped around the 18-inch wheels are high-performance 235/40R-18 Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tyres, developed after rigorous testing on all kinds of road surfaces and in all kinds of conditions, including one of the most famous racing circuits in the world, the legendary Nürburgring in Germany. Inside, Ford designers worked hard to ensure the driver feels as connected to the car as possible. Sporty Recaro seats – available in partial or full leather – help deliver a unique, cockpit look and provide exceptional support and comfort. Additional details range from specially designed pedals to the steering wheel and gearshift. The darker headlining and trim on the pillars, an integral part of the ST’s design DNA, adds to the performance feel. “Be it for the enthusiast or the novice, the new Focus ST possesses all the great, fun-to-drive qualities that customers want,” said Harris. “Thanks to its exhilarating performance, road-gripping dynamics and superior levels of refinement, the Focus ST is a performance car that is ideal for everyday driving.”

Key features and innovations include: • Optimised bulkhead and loadspace design enables SWB model to carry three Euro pallets loaded to at least one metre high • Load-through hatch in bulkhead enables loads up to three metres in length, such as pipes or ladders, to be safely carried inside the vehicle • Class-leading width between wheelarches allows wide loads, such as 8 feet x 4 feet (2440mm x 1220mm) boards to be easily accommodated flat on the floor (or stored vertically if required) • Class-leading height and width of sliding side load doors for ease of loading • Deployable integrated roof rack system seamlessly integrated into the roof, and can be deployed when required. When not in use, the cross bars can be quickly folded down, reducing drag and fuel consumption, as well as keeping the vehicle height under two metres (with the exception of the 330 series) • Repositioned tie-down hooks and fixing points located on the body sides, leaving the floor clear for easier loading and cleaning • Easy clean load floor liner offers enhanced durability and simple cleaning To provide customers with a wide range of payload options from 600-1,400kg, Transit Custom is available with multiple GVM options. “This may be a more stylish Transit, but it’s a more functional Transit too,” said Barry Gale, Commercial Vehicles chief engineer, Ford of Europe. “The additional features we have built into the load space make everyday functions more convenient – so it’s easier for customers to do their job.” Unmatched driver appeal The Transit Custom brings a new level of car-like driver appeal to its segment with an all-new interior, advanced technologies and outstanding driving dynamics. The modern, driver-focused cockpit features a sculpted instrument panel which combines stylish looks with smart stowage solutions for bottles, phones and papers. Driver comfort is significantly enhanced through a highly adjustable driving position which features increased seat travel – including 30mm more rear travel for taller drivers – and the addition of a steering column adjustable for reach and rake. Once behind the wheel, the driver can call upon a wide range of available driver assistance technologies also featured on Ford’s latest passenger cars, including: • SYNC voice-activated, in-car connectivity system – enables mobile phones and music players to be connected to the vehicle, and operated by voice control • Emergency Assistance – enabled by SYNC, this award-winning new feature is designed to assist occupants to contact the Emergency Services in the event of an accident, providing vehicle location information • Rear-view camera – display integrated into the rear view mirror • Lane Keeping Alert and Driver Alert – latest driver assistance features alert the driver if the system detects the vehicle is inadvertently drifting out of the lane, or the driver is becoming tired behind the wheel The strong driver appeal of the Transit Custom is reinforced by dynamics and performance which have been carefully tuned to reflect the same natural and easy-to-drive character which customers appreciate on Ford’s car range. To achieve this, engineers have developed the new Ford global one-tonne platform which underpins the Transit Custom to make it much stiffer and stronger – increasing torsional stiffness by as much as 37 percent – benefitting both handling and noise levels. Meticulous tuning of the suspension components and steering system has resulted in significantly improved ride comfort, along with more precise and agile handling. Like the new Ford Focus, the Transit Custom also features the latest Electronic Stability Program technology with Torque Vectoring Control for enhanced traction and stability. The stiffer structure, together with a comprehensive effort to eliminate unwanted noise and vibrations throughout the vehicle, has resulted in a quieter environment for the driver – speech intelligibility has improved by nine percent within the cab. To maximise occupant protection, the Transit Custom features an optimised body structure which features ultra-high-strength Boron steel for the first time on a Transit. In total, over 40 percent of the body is made from high-strength or ultra-high-strength steels, resulting in a strong and light body which is designed to offer high levels of crash protection. The new vehicle also features an enhanced restraint system which now gives customers the option of specifying curtain airbags for the front seat occupants, in addition to driver and passenger airbags and seat-mounted side thorax airbags. As on Ford’s latest passenger cars, a horizontal stroking steering column is also now fitted, to help reduce loads on the occupant’s head and chest in the event of a high speed frontal impact. Traditional Transit cost-of-ownership and durability Like all Ford commercial vehicles which share the Transit badge, the all-new Transit Custom has been developed to offer exceptional cost-of-ownership and durability. Low running costs start with the class-leading fuel economy, delivered by an improved version of Ford’s 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine. Available in 100PS, 125PS and 155PS power ratings, this torquey and responsive power unit now features Auto-Start-Stop as standard on Stage V vehicles, delivering combined fuel consumption of 6.6l100km (42.8mpg) and 174g/km CO2 emissions – a reduction of up to 8 per cent on the equivalent current Transit. Minimising overall cost-of-ownership was a high priority throughout the vehicle design and development, with key features including minimised maintenance and repair times, a 12-year anti-perforation warranty, and the longest service intervals in the class at two-years /50,000 km/30,000 miles. To ensure the legendary Transit toughness, the all-new Transit Custom has been subjected to Ford’s ultra-stringent Commercial Vehicle testing and durability standards. Even before the vehicle goes on sale, it will have been driven the equivalent of five million km (three million miles), including at least 400,000km (250,000 miles) with Transit customers. Key components and systems are tested to the limit: for example, doors go through an intensive regime of 250,000 slam cycles, which is three times more punishing than Ford’s equivalent passenger car test. New generation of Ford commercial vehicles The launch of the Transit Custom marks the next step of a complete transformation of Ford’s global Commercial Vehicle range which will see the entire line-up replaced by 2014. Ford will be presenting larger and higher payload Transits later in 2012. These models will be extensively sold on a global basis, including North America, and will also feature rear-wheel-drive. Production of the new Transit Custom will start from mid-2012 at Ford’s plant in Kocaeli, Turkey, with market availability later in the year.
  13. All-New 1.0-litre Ford EcoBoost Engine Further Extends Advanced EcoBoost Technology in China The all-new engine will debut in China in the all-new Ford EcoSport – offering the performance of a conventional 1.6-litre engine with less than 140g/km CO2 emissions The fuel-efficient three-cylinder broadens the range of EcoBoost™ engines in China – the new Mondeo is currently available with a 2.0-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder while the all-new Ford Kuga will feature 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre EcoBoost engines This newest and smallest member of the global family of EcoBoost engines features advanced turbo-charging technology, improved twin independent variable camshaft timing and intelligent ancillaries to deliver performance that belies its small size Ford Ecoboost Forum – Ford is expanding its advanced EcoBoost™ powertrain technology in China with the addition of its newest and smallest-ever EcoBoost engine. With only three cylinders and 1.0 litre of displacement, the latest EcoBoost engine will provide fuel-efficient power for the all-new Ford EcoSport. Despite its smaller capacity and proportions, the engine delivers power and performance that will rival a traditional 1.6-litre petrol engine while emitting less than 140g/km CO2. It will have 88 kW of power and 170 Nm of torque. Mated to a five-speed manual transmission, it will give the Ford EcoSport a footprint that is small enough for urban driving yet robust enough for a trip out of the city. The 1.0-litre EcoBoost uses turbocharging and direct fuel injection to extract impressive levels of power and fuel efficiency from its three-cylinder engine block, which is so small that it can fit on a sheet of A4 paper. This combination of power and low CO2 emissions is unmatched by competitors in its segment. Ultimately, this all-new engine will be made available in Ford models in Asia, Europe, North America and other regions. The 1.0-litre three-cylinder is the latest addition to Ford’s family of EcoBoost engines in China. The new Mondeo currently features a 2.0-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder while the all-new Ford Kuga will launch with a 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine as well as the 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine. Downsized EcoBoost engines feature turbocharging, direct injection and other technologies and replace larger engines with no loss of performance and with lower fuel consumption. “China was one of the first markets in Asia to enjoy the progressive EcoBoost technology,” said Kumar Galhotra, vice president, Product Development, Ford Asia Pacific and Africa. “The introduction of the small-but-potent 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine demonstrates Ford’s continued commitment to bring the latest powertrains that deliver superior fuel economy and reduced carbon dioxide emissions to China.” Compact and responsive Developed at Ford’s Dunton Technical Centre in the U.K., the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine features a new compact, high performance turbocharger design. The extremely fast response of the turbocharger and its ability to reach nearly 250,000 rpm results in virtually no turbo lag and peak torque of 170 Nm from 1,300-4,500 rpm. This high torque supports a fuel-efficient driving style and delivers a good performance feel and diesel-like torque experience. The all-new EcoBoost engine also features an exhaust manifold cast into the cylinder head, which lowers the temperature of the exhaust gases and in turn enables the engine to run with the optimum fuel-to-air ratio across a wider rev band. An advanced “split cooling” system reduces fuel consumption by warming the engine more quickly and – unique to the 1.0 engine –cast iron has been selected for the block, reducing the amount of energy needed for warm-up by up to 50 per cent compared with aluminium. Intelligent ancillaries such as a variable air-conditioning compressor and oil pump also reduce demand on the engine – improving economy and emissions – while special coatings for engine components and intricate development of engine geometry result in minimal frictional losses. Like its larger-capacity siblings, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine will use twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) to further improve performance and economy. Ford has also employed an all-new camshaft actuator to speed up response times without sacrificing durability. “The 1.0-litre EcoBoost delivers great low-speed responsiveness, power, torque and smoothness,” said Galhotra. “To produce an engine with such impressive performance and fuel economy clearly reflects our commitment to be class-leading in fuel economy around the world." Smooth and refined In the all-new 1.0-litre Ford EcoBoost engine, the emphasis in development has been on delivering both smooth and refined performance. Engine refinement is improved thanks to an innovative design that immerses the two main engine drive belts in oil – resulting in quieter and more efficient running but with the durability of a chain. Careful attention has also been paid to mitigating the natural vibrations of the three-cylinder design. Rather than employ the traditional method of adding energy-draining balancer shafts, Ford engineers have deliberately “unbalanced” the flywheel and pulley to offset the engine configuration. Ford believes these innovations combined with optimised engine mounts will deliver a truly refined performance feel perfected during 720,000 kilometres of tests – including 360,000 kilometres of durability trials and 10,000 kilometres of environmental testing. “Fitted with a long list of innovative technologies, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost is one of the most technically advanced and efficient engines Ford has ever designed and produced,” said Galhotra. “This new engine demonstrates Ford’s laser focus on improving fuel economy without compromising performance. It will be an engine that not only surprises and delights our customers but also offers them great value in the lower cost of ownership.”

  16. Ford Assembly Teams Prepare for All-New 2013 Escape Production; Train in Simulated Factory at Louisville Plant • Every assembly operator at revamped Louisville Assembly Plant spends at least one week in hands-on training before working on the line to build the 2013 Ford Escape • A simulated factory enables up to 60 employees at once to practice the kind of operations they will perform on the assembly line in real time Ford Escape Forum – Today’s manufacturing technology and the products rolling off the assembly line are more complex than ever. At the same time, customer expectations for product quality and reliability are higher than ever. That’s why the team at the transformed Louisville Assembly Plant (LAP) is committed to achieving top-notch quality levels from the time the very first all-new 2013 Ford Escape is produced. Following more than two decades as the home of the body-on-frame Ford Explorer, the 3.2-million-square-foot Louisville plant was cleared for installation of one of the most advanced flexible assembly lines in the world. Now, the transformed LAP is equipped with the most modern, electric tools in the industry that are much quieter and more reliable than older pneumatic models. Electric tools also provide more consistent results during even simple tasks, such as tightening nuts and bolts. Preparing the workforce through proper training to build vehicles using these new state-of-the-art tools and techniques is critical to the plant’s success. “Whether they are Ford veterans or new hires, we want every member of the production team to be fully prepared to build world-class vehicles from day one,” said John Savona, Louisville Assembly plant manager. “That’s why each team member will spend at least 40 hours in our state-of-the-art training facility before they can build a single 2013 Escape on the line.” A veteran leader of five other Ford factories, Savona and his teams developed the simulated factory concept at three other plants over the past decade. The version implemented in Louisville is the most advanced yet, with eight different workstations where up to 60 people can train at once for a full eight hours. Initially, team members spend several days learning about the plant’s new tools and operating processes, including quality and safety procedures. Once they move into the simulation area, trainees practice representative operations on a workbench using what is known as a breadboard, as well as by working on an actual Escape model. Training for members of United Auto Workers Local 862 began in the simulated factory facility last fall. “In the simulated factory, team members use the same types of tools they will use in production for similar operations,” said Vaughn Harbin, LAP training and development leader. “They also practice the types of operations that tend to be most problematic in production, such as connecting brake lines and fitting weather stripping.” While practicing with real tools in a classroom environment is important, it also is critical for every employee on the assembly line to remember they are part of a much larger production team consisting of more than 1,000 people at a time. In order to keep the line running smoothly and efficiently, each team member must perform his or her job within a prescribed amount of time. The hands-on training employees receive in LAP also takes timing into consideration. “The LAP simulated factory is the first one to feature a visual indicator for the line cycle time so that trainees can get used to how quickly the real line will move,” said Savona. “Ten Model Ts run on a belt above the test stands on the simulator line. As the Model T moves into the operator’s zone, they can see at a glance how much time they have to complete their task.” In addition to training operators who work on the assembly line, the LAP training facility also provides a hands-on experience for the electricians, millwrights and pipe-fitters who keep all of the equipment in proper working order. The training center gives the skilled-trades staff an opportunity to service the same type of tools, robots and transfer equipment found on the factory floor. Since the original Escape debuted more than a decade ago, it has consistently been one of the best-selling vehicles in the Ford lineup. The team at Louisville Assembly Plant is committed to making the next-generation model a winner from its production start with world-class quality that matches the sleek styling and outstanding fuel efficiency customers are sure to appreciate. LAP will kick off Escape production later this month with two shifts before eventually adding a third crew later this year. On three crews at full line speed, LAP will have approximately 4,200 hourly employees, including 400 skilled-trades staff, building the new Escape. The team will be comprised of a mix of veterans from the Louisville plant, transfers from 36 other Ford factories and new hires.

Ford’s global small car vehicle line director Joerg Beyer said, “The B-MAX is packed full of innovative thinking, from its unique door concept, to the advanced 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine to the powerful SYNC voice control system. Customers looking for a compact and versatile vehicle now have an exciting new choice.” The B-MAX is just over 4 metres in length, only 11cm longer than the Fiesta five-door and a full 32cm shorter than the new C-MAX; perfectly placing it to meet the fast-growing demand for downsized cars, suited to congested urban conditions without making any compromise on interior space or passenger comfort. More photos here Unique Ford Easy Access Door System The unique Ford Easy Access Door System delivers new levels of convenience, access and flexibility. It features conventional, hinged front doors and rear sliding doors, combined in a new body design. This integrates the traditional central pillar structure into the front and rear doors, rather than forming part of the bodyshell itself. When both front and rear doors are open there is outstanding access to the interior, with a huge, clear aperture more than 1.5 metres wide. This is around twice the width offered by competitors with alternative door concepts and makes it significantly easier to enter or exit the rear seats, attend to children in child seats, or load and unload shopping2. B-MAX’s twin sliding rear doors also offer added benefits in crowded streets or narrow parking bays when access via hinged doors could be awkward. The front and rear doors can be opened completely independently, so the front or rear cabin can be accessed as required. Outstanding interior versatility The B-MAX combines the Ford Easy Access Door System with a flexible and easy-to-use seating system. The 60/40 split rear seats can be folded flat with a simple ‘one-hand, one-motion’ mechanism. The front passenger seat can also be folded, creating an extensive flat load floor from front to rear, capable of swallowing exceptionally long loads measuring up to 2.35 metres in length. The generous access makes it particularly convenient to load bulky items through the side doors, such as flat-pack furniture or even a bicycle. An adjustable load floor in the boot creates a flat load space when the rear seats are lowered, with extra room underneath for valuable items to be hidden from view. More photos here Drivers benefit from a higher ‘command’ seating position in the B-MAX, whose overall vehicle height is 12cm taller than the Fiesta. This also significantly improves rear seat legroom and headroom. Engineered for outstanding safety Ford engineers developed innovative solutions to ensure the B-MAX delivers the same outstanding levels of crash protection as vehicles with a more conventional structure. “Retaining all the customer benefits of the door system, while maintaining occupant safety performance, was a central focus,” explained Klaus-Peter Tamm, chief programme engineer, Ford of Europe. “With clever engineering solutions – which are the subject of multiple patent applications – the development team has brought an exciting concept to full production.” The structure of both front and rear doors has been strengthened to deliver required performance in side impacts, with ultra-high-strength Boron steel in key load-bearing areas so the door frames work together to absorb energy like a virtual pillar. More photos here Special safety interlocks and reinforced latch mechanisms help the doors to remain fixed to the roof and floor structure during an impact to enable them to act together to help protect the occupants. This and further structural enhancements to the bodyshell and the latest restraint system technologies create a body which is designed to offer high levels of crash protection. High-strength and ultra-high-strength steels account for 58 percent of the body and door structure and ensure it is strong and rigid while remaining highly weight-efficient. Compact, sporty and stylish Ford has applied kinetic design language to create a compact, sporty and stylish car which adds its own distinctive character to Ford’s MAV line-up. “We set out to create a vehicle that captures the spirit of the S-MAX, but is smaller,” said Martin Smith, Ford of Europe’s Executive Design Director. “We wanted to show that a small car could be very spacious and practical inside, while still having the sleek, dynamic appearance that made the S-MAX so popular.” The vehicle’s striking front-end features a bold new interpretation of Ford’s signature trapezoidal grille. Other distinctive kinetic design elements include strong headlamp graphics, the muscular shoulder line with its powerful undercut, a characteristic window line with its kick-up behind the rear doors, and prominent wheel lips. The bold three-dimensional surfacing of the body-sides helps to avoid the tall, blocky look which is common in this class of vehicle, and includes a unique new rocker treatment, with a stylish ‘zigzag’ form on the rear doors. B-MAX is also true to the Ford fun-to-drive DNA with class-leading driving dynamics featuring Torque Vectoring Control for superior traction and agility. More photos here Spacious premium interior Bold graphics and sculptured surfaces develop the themes found in Ford’s latest small and medium cars. Distinctive features include the slim, wing-like section of the upper instrument panel which reaches out to the door panels, and the prominent centre console, which flows down between the front seats. High quality, contemporary materials emphasise craftsmanship and detailing, highlighting that small, practical cars can also be comfortable and well-equipped. An optional full-size panoramic glass roof enhances the sensation of space. Best-in-class fuel economy for petrol and diesel The B-MAX brings new standards of fuel efficiency to the compact MAV class with Ford’s latest petrol and diesel powertrains equipped with low-CO2 ECOnetic Technologies. The petrol engine line-up is led by the three-cylinder 1.0-litre Ford EcoBoost petrol engine, available in 100PS and 120PS versions. Equipped with the Ford Auto-Start-Stop system as standard, the 120PS EcoBoost engine achieves class-leading CO2 emissions of 114g/km and fuel consumption of 4.9l/100km (57.6mpg). Other petrol engine options include the 90PS 1.4-litre Duratec unit, or the 105PS 1.6-litre Duratec engine which is paired with Ford’s high-efficiency PowerShift six-speed automatic transmission with advanced dual clutch technology. B-MAX is available with a choice of two Duratorq TDCi diesel engines; each offering best-in-class fuel efficiency. The 95PS 1.6-litre engine delivers CO2 emissions of 104g/km and fuel consumption of 4.0l/100km (70.6mpg). The 75PS 1.5-litre diesel, closely derived from the 1.6-litre engine, appears for the first time in Ford’s European product range. It achieves CO2 emissions of 109g/km and fuel consumption of 4.1l/100km (68.9mpg). ECOnetic Technologies fitted as standard to all B-MAX vehicles include Electric Power Assisted Steering, which requires less energy than hydraulic power assisted steering systems, Gear Shift Indicator to highlight the most efficient gear changing points, and the Ford Eco Mode driver information system which helps drivers adopt a more economical driving style. Smart Regenerative Charging, which charges the battery at the most economical point in a journey, is also featured on the 1.0-litre EcoBoost and 1.5/1.6-litre Duratorq engines. More photos here Ford SYNC technology with Emergency Assistance The B-MAX will be among the most technologically advanced small cars in Europe when it goes on sale in late 2012. SYNC is an advanced voice control, device integration and connectivity interface. It enables users to connect mobile phones and music players by Bluetooth or USB, make hands-free telephone calls and control music and other functions using voice commands. It can automatically transfer contact information from a connected Bluetooth device to the vehicle, allows calls to contacts The system is already a huge success in the U.S. and is expected to appear on more than 3.5 million new vehicles in Europe by 2015. SYNC also enables the B-MAX to offer the innovative new Emergency Assistance feature which is designed to assist the occupants to call the local emergency services operator in the event of an accident. Emergency Assistance is the most advanced system of its type, capable of communicating with emergency services in more than 30 countries and provided to customers free of charge for the life of their vehicle. Through the GPS locator in the vehicle, it is able to ensure communications with the emergency services operator in the correct language throughout Europe to provide peace of mind and potentially life-saving technology to the B-MAX customer. More photos here ‘Right-sized’ for modern motoring The B-MAX features premium technologies demanded by buyers looking to ‘right-size’ their new car. Around 40 percent of B-MAX customers are expected to choose B-MAX after previously owning a larger vehicle. Comfort features to satisfy these customers include an exclusive eight-speaker Sony audio system, Key Free system, Ford Power Button, Rear View Camera and full leather upholstery with premium embossed leather. The B-MAX has placed a particular focus on achieving the kind of agility and manoeuvrability which will prove especially valuable in the cut and thrust of city driving. It is also the first vehicle in its segment to provide the added reassurance of the Active City Stop system, designed to help motorists avoid low speed collisions with stationary or slower moving traffic in front. “We believe the all-new Ford B-MAX is the right vehicle at the right time,” said Stephen Odell. “Its combination of style, versatility and premium technologies brings something new to the compact car market, and will attract many new customers to the Ford brand.” # # # Editor’s notes 1. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine in the new rear-wheel-drive Transit will complement the van’s expected class-leading driving dynamics and technology, making it the perfect replacement for Ford’s venerable E-Series wagon and van in North America. “The new Ford Transit commercial van will deliver all the capability and capacity that customers get with today’s E-Series, but with the bonus of improved fuel economy and potentially lower operating costs thanks to its available EcoBoost engine,” said Tim Stoehr, Ford Commercial Truck Marketing manager. “This engine has revolutionized the half-ton pickup segment for F-150 and we’re expecting it will have the same effect on commercial vans.” The new Transit will go beyond living up to the Ford E-Series’ exceptional work reputation. The vehicle will achieve at least 25 percent better fuel economy compared to similar E-Series vans, due in part to smart weight savings that will trim at least 300 pounds from Transit compared to a similar E-Series van. That means customers could potentially save thousands of dollars in operating costs from fuel savings. EcoBoost engines are fundamental to the Ford strategy of providing technologically advanced, high-output, smaller-displacement powertrains that deliver exceptional fuel economy and uncompromised performance for millions of drivers around the world. By 2013, Ford plans to produce up to 1.5 million EcoBoost engines globally in a wide variety of vehicles from small cars to trucks. EcoBoost engines feature: A high-pressure direct-injection fuel system fed by a common rail that delivers a precise amount of gasoline in the exact spot for fast and complete burn Turbocharging to create a denser mix of air and fuel in each cylinder Special pistons with optimized bowls in the center to improve combustion efficiency. These pistons are also oil-cooled, which reduces in-cylinder temperatures Reduced CO2 emissions and excellent fuel economy compared to V8 engines with similar power ratings The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 available in the Ford F-150 had a successful year in 2011, exceeding 100,000 sales in less than one year on the market. EcoBoost-equipped F-150s now account for more than 40 percent of F-150 retail sales. Gasoline direct injection A key contributor to EcoBoost fuel efficiency is direct injection of gasoline. This system precisely delivers a fine mist of fuel directly into each cylinder for optimal performance, economy and emissions. Unlike port-fuel-injection (PFI) engines that spray fuel in the intake system before it enters the combustion chamber, the direct-injection system puts the fuel exactly where it needs to be in the cylinder for optimal combustion. A high-pressure injector is positioned to the side of each cylinder, aiming the fuel directly into the cylinder adjacent to a high-intensity spark plug and alongside the intake and exhaust valves. Fuel is sprayed into the cylinders at pressures of up to 2,150 pounds per square inch, which is about 35 times more intense than PFI injection. Cargo and people hauler The current-generation Transit van is the best-selling van in Europe. Ford has sold more than 6 million Transits across five continents since its original launch in 1965. The Transit is currently offered to global customers in a variety of cargo, passenger and chassis cab configurations with a choice of efficient diesel engines. In 2010, the 6-millionth Transit rolled off the production line in Turkey. Conceived as Ford’s first pan-European product in the mid-1960s, the next generation Transit will become a global asset with the availability of the full-size rear-wheel versions in the US. To get ready for production in the U.S. by 2013, Ford is investing $1.1 billion in its Kansas City Assembly Plant, where the Transit will be built alongside the F-150.
