Volkswagen targets dominance in Europe with affordable EV push Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume told CNBC on Monday that the car company is focused on improving its electromobility market dominance in Europe. It comes as the German auto giant unveils the ID. CROSS Concept car, which is set to go on the market in the first half of next year. Shares of Volkswagen are up around 12.2% so far this year. The chief executive of Volkswagen says the German auto giant is pushing to strengthen its electromobility dominance in Europe with a new lineup of compact and affordable electric vehicles. Volkswagen, the largest supplier of electric cars in both Germany and Europe this year, unveiled the small all-electric ID. Cross Concept car over the weekend, before a roll-out into the market in the first half of next year. This is Volkswagen’s fourth launch in a family of new electric models, following the ID.2 all, the ID. GTI Concept and the ID. EVERY1. “We have worked hard during the last years to improve our software, to improve our battery offerings. This family will be the first where we are introducing our unified cell concept in terms of battery,” Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume told CNBC’s Annette Weisbach on Monday. “We will be competitive and right now, in Europe, for example, we are a market leader by far in electromobility with 28% market share. This family is another push to making this market share even bigger,” Blume said. Volkswagen’s ID. Cross Concept car will have an entry price level of around 25,000 euros ($29,316), Blume said.

Ford Motor Co.’s hot-selling Mustang Mach-E electric SUV and other plug-in models are being rendered unprofitable by rising raw material costs. “We actually had a positive bottom line profit when we launched the Mach-E, commodity costs have wiped that out,” Chief Financial Officer John Lawler said Wednesday at the Deutsche Bank Global Automotive Conference, referring to 2020, when the vehicle went on sale. “You’re going to see pressure on the bottom line when we launch our EVs, they’re not going to be positive.” link: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ford-mustang-mach-e-profit-170117652.html

About 150 General Motor Co. dealers are parting ways with Cadillac instead of investing in costly upgrades required to sell electric cars, according to FOX Business. GM recently gave the dealers the choice: accept a buyout ranging from $300,000 to more than $1 million to exit the brand or spend about $200,000 to upgrade their dealerships for the sale of electric vehicles. About 17% of Cadillac’s 880 US dealerships agreed to take the offer to end their franchise agreements for the luxury brand, because many of them own other GM brands like Chevrolet and Buick and don’t sell many Cadillacs. That decision illustrates that even as the value of electric vehicles rises, many car industry insiders remain skeptical about selling and investing in the products. Dealers are weighing costly facility investments like electrical-system upgrades against uncertainty about demand for the vehicles, which now account for about 2% of U.S. vehicle sales. Some retailers say they are putting off orders of electric models, worried they will sit too long on their lots. Even in markets where electric vehicles are more popular, like San Francisco, dealers say the lack of commuting during the pandemic has led to a drop off in demand for cars like GM’s Chevrolet Bolt. https://nypost.com/2020/12/06/unplugged-cadillac-dealers-ditch-brand/

Instead of a Geek squad or electrician installed 220 charger, how about a simple charger that just plugs into an existing 220 outlet? Lots of folks have an outlet already, and it would be great if we could just use it "as is" for the faster 220 volt charging. I've heard rumors that this in development, but don't know if they are true. This would also help lower the initial cost of buying an EV or PHEV because no electrical work would have to be done.
