06 Explorer, shifter not engaging from Park

Recommended Posts

I have a 2006 Ford Exporer, XLT, V6, 4WD and when I start the vehicle, i press the barke to shift from park to reverse or drive, it will not engage.

After several attempts (pressing brake), then it will click and off I go.

What causes this, is this normal, what can i do to fix this problem???

some say it is a switch on the shifter, some say it could be the shifter??

your thoughts??

Here is the order i would address your issue (easy one first ) Check if it done the trick after each step

1.) Check the break pedal switch,

a.) see if there is a adjustment nut on the switch, adjust it if need be, so it depresses the plunger properly when you step on the brake.Press plunger in by hand and see if it moves smoothly, while you're down there to check for a adjustment nut.

b.)remove switch, clean and lube plunger, check electrical connection (clean and lube them too..)

check resistance with ohm meter

c.) possibly replace it

2.) Follow the shifter cable to the tranny, if there is a linkage present , clean and lube it.

3.) Detach cable from shifter and lube cable

Yes, ( some say it is a switch on the shifter ) while you have the shifter exposed check and see if there is switch present. a.) applies

Hope this helps somewhat

I had this problem with my 06 V8 that was fixed under a recall. You may want to talk to your dealer's service center to see if the recall included the V6.
