  1. During the course of the test drive the salesman did say that the upcoming Fusion hybrid would be using the Toyota technology.

What do we know about this?

That it's a complete, and utter, lie. Ford has their own hybrid system. The system used in the Escape was similar enough in concept to Toyotas system that the two entered into a patent sharing agreement. The system used in the Fusion will be the next generation of the Ford system.

  2. Well because it doesn't cost much to re-use the bits of D3 that are being reused, and because EUCD2 isn't due until next decade, and because Ford doesn't have a U.S. supply base for all the EUCD/EUCD2 bits.

Which is why I'm suspicious of the speculation by some that the Mazda6 will be EUCD. However, if it is (And I believe that to be an extra large IF), there's your bits.

  3. Also, if Ford uses D3 for RWD vehicles, is it possible that they will retain D3 for FWD vehicles (Taurus family, Sable, Flex, MKS, MK-whatever), instead of migrating them to EUCD2?

If Ford had plans to ditch D3 for EUCD2, wouldn't it be crazy for them to be developing the Flex and MKS on it?

  4. The CVT has been cancelled, and it's only used in the Escape now which uses the old hybrid design.

The DSG is supposed to be in production this year, and the Fusion hybrid won't be a big seller.. so is this possible?

    Any hints guys?

The e-CVT used in the Hybrid is not the same as the CVT which was used in the 500/Freestyle. It is unlikely that the hybrid will use a DSG in lieu of the CVT due to the way the CVT is integral to most hybrid systems.

  5. My 2003 Escape has drums in the rear, when they added the four wheel disc in 05 it had a negligible impact on braking performance. If the one brake result turns out to be a fluke (preproduction model, etc) and it brakes like my 03 I'd have no issue with it. That said, I'll wait for the Escape to get a new tranny before upgrading.

  6. Well with the news reports (not rumors) of the Explorer going to Unibody in the near future, the Business case for the Interceptor/MRK and a IRS Mustang just paid off, since it would be a no brainer to put it on the same platform, much like the G35/FX/Murano all on the same platform.

The Murano is not on the same platform as the Z/G/M/FX. The Murano is based on Nissans FWD architecture, NOT the FM platform.

  7. The Rav4 and Escape really aren't even in the same league size-wise anymore, so why the need to match them in power? I would agree with you on the fuel economy aspect however.

The differential between the 2005 RAV4 and Escape was larger than that of the 2006 RAV and the Escape, yet they are the same class. Both are compact SUVs, and people in this target market shop as much by price as they do size. People definitely cross-shop the RAV with the Escape, it's not like we're talking about a 4Runner.

  8. I can understand why Ford didn't change the tranny in the Escape/Mariner. Currently, the only AWD Transaxles that ford has in production (up to last month when the CD3 trio AWD vehicles started rolling) was the CVT from the D3s and the C4DE from the Escape. They buy the Volvo AWD auto for the XC90 from someone else (don't remember). That's it.

Ford has used a Jatco 5-speed unit in the Mazda6 and MPV, AND an AWD version of that unit on the X-type. Not sure if they still use it on the X-type. If they plan on going with a Ford tranny in the future using another transmission until it was ready, or NOT releasing the 2008 so insanely early until it was available would have made more sense. What's that about first impressions?

  9. As for the old 4 speed unit, it will upgraded to a 6 speed when the 3.0L gets its upcoming redesign.

If that is really the case then the move is even more ridiculous than it at first seems. People read magazines. Magazines test vehicles. The tests that get the most press are when they include vehicles which are substantially revised. There will be press now for the 08 Escape and Mariner, and they WILL decry the existing powertrain. In a year, two, or more when they replace the CD4e, even IF it makes a HUGE difference it will not get the kind of press that the negative impression will. If it's a matter of not having capacity to produce enough of the Ford 6-speed then use one of the trannies used in the Mazda6 as a stop gap in the mean time.

    Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

  10. Keeping the CD4e has to be the dumbest move I have seen from Ford in a long time. I can see keeping the 3.0, but the CD4e? Shame, looks like they put a fair amount of effort into it (Though I prefer the current Mary styling) but that one fact will keep me from buying another Escape until they replace it with something else.

  11. WTF! I can see sticking with the 3.0 (Though I had hoped to see improved power ala Fusion/M6) but they really are releasing this thing with the same 4-speed CD4e transmission? My Escape has been great, and I would consider another Escape when I go to replace it, but the CD4e has not had the greatest track record in the Escape and I hate being on pins and needles because of it. Had they thrown one of the 6 speeds in it I would have probably jumped at the 2008 (Though the new Mary is not to my liking aesthetically)

  12. But I also favor having modern people mover alternatives. If Chrysler has room in its lineup for both the PT Cruiser and the Caliber, I think GM and Ford could manage that too.

Well, if Ford does come out with the Bronco as a "cute-ute" isn't it potentially their HHR Fighter?
