  1. Well it is unstable, but not in the sense of day to day use, but as a platform on which you can build reliably.

You wouldn't just use an off the shelf version. You'd use your own version like Tivo does. Then again Tivo doesn't have externally connected devices to worry about.

Besides - OS stability doesn't seem to be the problem with MFT - it's the app software.

  2. But as a development platform for an infotainment system with support for 3rd party developers? I'm sorry, I can't get behind that idea at all.

I thought you were implying it was unstable. If you're talking about support for 3rd party development tools and device drivers for device connectivity then I can see where that might be a problem.

  3. Thanks for your useless piece of information. Believe it or not, using forums to enquire with experienced people IS a form of research. I'm sorry I offended you by using this method.

Maybe I'm wrong but when I DID look at Ford's website, I was unable to find a definitive answer. At least not the Canadian version of the site.

Go to Build and Price. Select Titanium. See if you can find an option for a stand alone backup camera. If you can't then it doesn't exist. If you can then it does exist. It will only take 5 minutes and you'll have the definitive answer. Nobody has much experience with a 2013 Escape so the only way for us to answer your question is to do what I just described.

  4. I was told by my dealer that I can't get the rear view camera unless I get the whole Park-Assist package. I had a hard time believing that..

Is this true? If so, are after market rear view cameras compatible with the existing video screen?

Why don't you go to Ford.com and research it yourself? No need to rely on what the dealer tells you - the information is readily available.

It does appear that the salesman is correct at least on the SEL.

  5. Great write up. I ordered a 2013 2.0 awd escape and I've been researching the crap out of it. It's difficult to find people that have reviewed it without being paid to do so.

I'm also a DIY'er and that really is a disapointment about the engine under tray. I'm fortunate to have a hoist, but I still don't like the fact that it's not a simple task to change the oil.

    What were they thinking?

I can't wait to get it up and have a look at the underside.

My daughter's focus has one. It's a little annoying but very easy to take off and put back on even with the front wheels on ramps in the driveway.

  6. On Linux? Are you serious? Have you written anything in Linux at all, ever? Do you have any idea how bad an idea this is? Do you have any, any, any clue how bad an idea this is?

The first Tivo DVR was built on a linux kernel (and still is AFAIK). Stable as a rock.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux is very stable and on a x86 virtualized infrastructure is rapidly replacing Solaris, HP-UX and AIX in corporate computing. The only drawback right now is a limited max server size due to x86 limitations.

  7. How difficult is it to order a mix of packages from the factory? (I never have ordered a new car before) For example, can I get SE Luxury package but then add a spoiler or push to start?

Go to the Ford website and you can compare models to see what options are or are not available. Or you can go to the Build and Price feature and that will show you what's available or not available on a specific model.

  8. Because the government has essentially said that as a gay person you aren't worth the same as a straight person. The fact that a gay person can't make end of life decisions for their life partner or file a joint tax return is discrimination. At the very least they are being denied tax benefits that us married folk get to claim. When you are president you are representing the USA and the populations beliefs and the reality is a good percentage of the population wants to know where the nominees stand as people are looking for a resolution.

I'm not saying its the most important issue in 2012 but then again neither is possible action in Iran. But a course of action is sure to be debated by Romney and Obama.

As i said people are looking for a resolution (relatively speaking) in part so that we can focus on the economy.

I agree with you and I support gay marriage. I just don't believe that it should be a political issue. And if the religious right wasn't pushing to ban gay marriage then it wouldn't be a political issue. And if it wasn't a political issue then maybe we could find some common ground and stop all this bipartisan bickering.

  9. Thats basically where i'm at. Create a budget that can sustain itself with a stable tax level. If that new tax level isn't able to dig us out of the debt from our current (last 40 years) policies then i support a higher tax rate for a defined time to pay down debt. Eg. an extra 3% tax will be levied for 5 years to pay down the debt. I would be comfortable with paying extra if it has a defined purpose.

This is what my county does with SPLOSTs (SPecial Local Option Sales Tax). We vote on a 1% sales tax increase with a specified period and expiration date and a specific list of projects that the money can be spent on - period.

Taxes should be used to pay for goverment expenses - not as a punishment or a tool to rob from the rich and give to the poor. But when you're jealous of other people's wealth and you have a victim's mentality that allows you to convince yourself that your circumstances are not your fault - or you're a savvy politician who gets votes by convincing people of that you lose sight of the true purpose of taxes.

  10. It is a stretch, but along the same lines IMO. Ford would never have released the Explorer had there been significant issues with the design and function of the grille, right? Or would they have knowing that grille would crack or fall off or braces would bust off, creating a quality nightmare?

It's never as simple as you are making it out to be. Let's say Ford knew the grille was going to fail after 3 months BUT they had already cancelled supplies of the old grille and they did not have time to create new ones. So the only choice they had was to sell them with the bad grille and fix them later OR stop selling the vehicle altogether for 3-4 months. In that case which would you choose?

The 2011 Edge had terrible MFT problems. Where is it now sales-wise? The average buyer doesn't even know about stuff like this and some who do know don't care. It's never a good thing but it rarely hurts overall sales. In fact I'd be willing to bet that Ford gained more buyers just due to MFT than they lost due to quality problems.
