  1. That's certainly part of it. I alluded to it earlier saying that Porsche does more than sell sports cars.

    Consider the following cost issues.

Porsche's biggest moneymaker is the Cayenne, without a doubt. Huge profit margins, and sales fueled by the Porsche name.

It's icon, the 911, has not been significantly redesigned in over 30 years, instead adopting slow and incremental improvements, with its biggest change being the adoption of a water-cooled version of its engine. Keeps the brand name strong, allowing them to sell Cayennes.

The Boxster and Cayman are low profit, but create volume and an entry-level to the brand.

Porsche would be like if the Mustang or Corvette were their own car companies.

A volume manufacturer cannot draw any benefits from Porsche's financial experience.

  2. It's too expensive for Ford to raise funds elsewhere because their credit ratings deep into junk bond territory.

    This is not fund-raising.

It's funding continuing FoMoCo Credit operations. Ford borrows from bank/treasury, then lends money to car buyers at a slightly higher rate, administers the loan, then takes an interest cut on the spread.

Ford has plenty of cash BECAUSE they fundraised several years ago, like a proactive and responsible company ought to.

  3. Lincoln needs to worry about designing a Lincoln, not a BMW or Mercedes.

Lexus went from nowhere to market leader in ten years, because they identified an underserved area of the luxury market, and built cars to suit them. Lincoln is doing the same, but when people here see an MKZ losing to a 328xi in a comparison test by race car drivers, the tears start cascading and Lincoln is accused of building a bad car.

  4. Yeah, I don't get it. Now I haven't driven a car with the 3.7, but it seems like the few extra ft/lbs of torque really aren't worth getting all that excited over. Does the engine rev more freely, or run smoother, or have a vastly better powerband that I don't know about? Otherwise it seems kind of redundant...

Yes. It is smoother and much more refined... it's said to be on par with the best of Lexus or Mercedes.

  5. Two debt holes do not make a viable asset. They'd have to be able to move this quickly - like eliminating thousands of UAW workers within minutes of signing the merger and tens of thousands within a year. They'd have to start aligning the supplier base, merge prodcuts, share components and do all of this with very little cash to spare. The only way this could possibly work is if Cerberus has more money than we think - because frankly, that's what this merger is lacking.

Cerberus is talking with everyone about a potential Chrysler merger. Nissan-Renault is still the most likely candidate.

And yes... Cerberus has a LOT of cash right now that they're sitting on.

  6. The interior looks good. Very upscale and modern, which is what Ford needs in their flagship sedan.

The Fusion will be the more important of the two sedans moving forward, but many customers will be looking for the roominess and cargo space the Taurus provides, and it should be able to capture SUV buyers going back to sedans.

  7. Saw this in an article today "The bill also has larger tax breaks for plug-in versions of medium and heavy-duty trucks. It would award a $10,000 tax credit for vehicles over 10,000 pounds; a $12,500 tax break for vehicles more than 14,000 pounds; and a $15,000 tax break for vehicles over 26,000 pounds." (see http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/artic.../810020388/1148 )

This is getting interesting. Maybe there is a future for Hummer in this.

Slap some swampers on this bad boy... wonder what the credit would be.

  8. I agree. Why does it always have to come to this? Why can't a positive article for Ford be a positive thread without bickering about some car not on the list?

Great job Ford, and hopefully the consumers will take note and give Ford a second look!

Because in the view of the Panther Mafia, any Ford vehicle other than the Panthers "stole" development money that SHOULD have been used on the Panther.

Therefore, the hate for all other Ford vehicles.

  9. I was at a family gathering today, and was chatting with my great uncle, who owns a Lincoln-Mercury franchise. Tough times, but one thing he noticed is that his customers LOVE the Voga Milan and Mariner, and virtually everyone he's shown them to have walked off the lots with them. He said he really doesn't understand it, but female customers (or the wives of male customers) seem to like something about them.

This isn't a cheap option either, at $995 for some bigger wheels, chrome, and badges.

  10. look the seats in stangs have sucked since 64.5.....ever been in a 70 boss with vinyl seats?...geez...your all over the place...from where i sit the gt500 seat looks far superior to what we had..i dont want nascrap seats in any stang as my big ass wont fit...you that do can get get aftermarket...personally i dont give a rats ass about foo foo ambient lighting and all the other gimmicky shit...if ford does not upgrade the motor then as far as i am concerned the car can rust in a field outside kearney nebraska

5.1 seconds to 60 for $26,000 not fast enough?

  11. LOL, Add some blue flashing lights on the grill and P might want one.

No. In all my years on this forum, I am yet to hear one positive or even constructively critical comment from him. He's admitted he'd never buy a new car, further adding to the futility. A vehicle almost identical to the Falcon is sold here, yet it has been SOUNDLY rejected by the American public.

  12. Everyone take a deep breath.

The next Falcon and Taurus will share a great deal, because both will be on GRWD.

P, just buy a G8 and be done with it. Ford doesn't manufacture anything you want to own, nor will they ever. There is literally nothing Ford can build and nothing they can do to win you as a customer. If they imported a Falcon as-is, you'd complain it was RHD. If they switched it to LHD, you would complain that it wasn't RHD.

  13. But a ZR-1 is worth the price. An overweight, ugly Mustang is not worth $70K...let alone $102K and $140K

Really, smart guy? If it isn't worth it, why are people buying them? An asset is only worth as much as people want to pay for it.

The GT500KR is a 2+2 sports coupe with a big engine. 4.2 seconds to 60, 1.0 g's on the skidpad, and 70mph through the slalom, and weighs about 3,900 lbs.

    2008-Shelby-GT500KR.jpg

I know of another big engined 2+2 that goes from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, pulls .89 g's on the skidpad, and goes through the cones at 67mph. It also costs $90,000 when it isn't marked up, and weighs about 3,800 lbs.

    BMW_M6-08.jpg

And yet, people are shelling out $140,000 for the first, but not the second, in spite of the second's much higher feature content.

  14. So VERY true!!!

And add to that, the Nissan dealers with the GT-R! Good luck finding one of those for MSRP!!

I had a chat with my local Nissan dealer about the GT-R. Their entire expected allocation was sold for $100k over MSRP, on average, and they think quite a few of those are being put in crates and stored.

The GT500KR is a really nice car... I've heard it corrects many of the things that were wrong with the GT500, in driving dynamics. I wouldn't mind a GT500KR trimmed out like a Bullitt...
