  1. Really, that was my point - it's all design choices - you can't please everyone. Nope, sorry not a fanboy - it's an objective view of both companies. Apple is not a developer, they are an assembler - they buy & assemble pieces into a product. Microsoft is a developer, though at times not a very good one. They do however have one excellent trait in that they will keep hammering away until it's right.............which doesn't do us much good. We can't say who has more input - I would guess however the opposite, Ford. I'm assuming they have the "right of refusal". For all we know MS showed them a metro-ish version & they said we'll pass..................it's not like it wasn't available given MS has been refining it on the 360 for quite some time. We'll never know, I can't figure it - seems perfect for a car, tiles with quick access? That's what makes me think it was Ford as it looks like it was designed by a car company & not a software company - if left to a software company I imagine we'd would have a metro style interface. The processor was a guess - it could be intentional to prevent mistakes or it could be the processor......or........ We've gone over the pros & cons of capacitive versus reactive - I can see why Ford chose the latter, makes sense in a car. Phones are a poor example - even fairly old(ish) ones have plenty of power. Mine isn't new & yet it still runs a snapdragon 1.5ghz dual core. Which brings us full circle to - why the hell is nav such an expensive upgrade? No like or dislike on the climate for me - I never go there (went a couple times, no real need to go there again). I use the capacitive "hard" buttons for defrost & back to auto, then set temp................outside of that I have zero need to change anything. Screw hard buttons on the seat heaters.................both physical buttons and screen buttons SUCK! Give me the roller switch, simple roll to desired heat, roll for off = easy. Screw this multiple pushes to get the seats to where I want & then for off.
  2. I could see myself doing the very same thing............and still missing the sign one day. Soon? Like what.......within a month? Ah that's easy - find a nice curvy road & stick your foot in it..............it'll ease the pain at the pump a bit. or even crazier still a car that keeps itself in the lane? or one that maintains a set following distance on the highway...................who knows what absurdities they'll come up with
  3. LMAO - yeah, how exactly does that work? Next time instead of repeated "no" that's what I'm going to say "only reason I'm buying the car is because the sales guy told me it was the most reliable car on the road.................guess he was wrong so I'll be leaving" See what he has to say then
  4. What I meant was that one often gets erroneous information at the dealership. A far better source for information are fan sites like this one, you can get more & more accurate information. There are a great many area in which the EPA & the gubmint need to get bent.....................just one other - who was the dumb ass who thought following the Cretin Air Resource Bureau was a good idea? Yep, ethanol @ the pump but not in the test................hmmmm...........why don't I get the numbers on the window sticker?
  5. You (we all) could move to Florida - they just repealed their ethanol mandate. Apparently the corn lobby is weak there. And you learned a lesson - false or misleading information = dealership, factual information = fan site (like here).
  6. And don't forget that going this route also keeps the warranty on the MFT - doubt Ford would do much for one that's been hacked.
  7. Ain't ever going to happen...........least of the problems is access to the functionality............................nobody, but nobody is stupid enough to allow the easiest device on the planet to hack access to that level of the car. Another issue warranty - Johnny Sclub write his little POS app & it causes problems with the AC system...............Ford should fix it? One thing to cause force closes or phone re-boots another to cause problems in a car. Nope, way too many issues. Work with Andriod, iOS, and Win? Yeah, okay, good luck with that. For one thing that would require google, Apple, an MS to use standard APIs - lmao - Apple? Work with anything not Apple? lmao................sure, okay, that's going to happen. Just a FWIW - you are aware Apple can't write an OS, right? They tried it once, abysmal failure. Nor did the write "Siri"................the don't actually build anything, they buy pieces & assemble them. MS can & does write an OS. It has steadily improved since inception - might be too late for us but I'd wager the next version will be very metro like. Speed? Yep, it's not the fastest but that's the processor.............and...............it's still much faster than many others I've seen. I've seen more than one car where by the time the review camera comes up I'm already down the road. Some as late as last year still have "one screen" - you pick the screen, no nice 4 displays on the home screen. I haven't used it so I have no idea but from the pictures I see exactly one thing more on the GM home screen - Pandora. Pretty much have access to everything else. "Siri"? Yeah, okay, haven't had an issue yet with Ford's system - well aside from remembering that it can pretty much do everything. To a certain extent it's all relevant - I don't like any of the seat heat controls, spent 8 years with a roller design = roll one way & it's hotter, roll the other for lower & off. This button (or screen) pushing sucks. Sadly even the company that had this system went to a button w/ multiple pushes. Main screen? Not terrible. At least I get 4 snapshots - live with a single choice for a while. Climate portion is fine, have auto & the seats = covers most everything. Use the ones down below for temp, defrost, etc. Haven't needed anything else. Entertainment portion is fine, has 6 radio choices (or whatever input) = its enough, can use the wheel to change or voice. Phone area is fine, I would change "do not disturb" to be the default/mandatory when the vehicle is moving. Nav is fine, not even sure why it's there when not using nav (oooh, going north - like I didn't know that). Climate screen - don't use it much with auto climate, seems redundant with the controls on the console. I have looked at it - seems to have everything present. Phone screen - Seems fine I generally only go there to use the address book to set the nav destination, rest is always voice & there's it's so much better than most. Easy enough to say "call Jane on cell" = dial. This is a two or three step process in a lot of cars. Or you can say "call 1-866-999-1212" Again multi step in most. Easy enough to read texts............my phone doesn't support outgoing, ain't Ford's fault. Nav screen - Seems okay, generally watch the damn road & listen, not terribly interested in watching the road go by. I do like the nav on the left drivers screen w/ a simple "okay" to repeat. I do like "set destination 132 West End Ave, Winchester VA" for voice. Maps for cars are almost always out of date - just the way it is. Entertainment screen - shows most of the stuff but with so many input options I'm not even sure where to begin. Pretty much every single entertainment screen I've seen looks cluttered...........the more options available the more busy it's going to get. It's that or have more sub-menus - that's not ideal. Is it like a tablet or phone? Nope, but then I don't expect it to be - it's simply there to control vehicle functions & not as an entertainment device. I mean you're supposed to be driving a damn car not being playing angry birds at lights. Great? Maybe not but most are worse.
  8. Not to say it's not an issue but I did laugh @ the whole "JD Powers" thing. Funny as hell given it's called a quality rating........what has design got to do with it? Ford wasn't alone in getting dinged - Lexus took some hits also (for the same, design choices). Porsche & GM at the top? Yeah, okay, sure Given the state of the technology it's part MFT & part the dinosaurs that can't adapt. Take the avg mind & ask it to deal with all the functions available? Example - know someone who refuses to use the auto climate in their car. It goes like this ......turn it on, set the temp............but.........instead of changing the temp to adjust the comfort/fan speed they use the fan control.........which drops it OUT of auto Doesn't matter what Ford does, ain't going to help they ain't ever going to adapt. What Ford should do is use TopGear as the design team..........they've already covered this, perfect for Americans. Can't find the entire episode (Season 19, episode 5) but this give you the idea - I'll not argue the whole nav/infotainment system isn't a bit over priced............but you ain't getting the phone for under $200. That's what may come out of your pocket at the time but it ain't the true cost. The maps will never offer the "street view", not happening................well unless they start having a fleet of cars drive around like google. Best one could hope for would be sat views & that would get you what? Why is nav so expensive in a car? No clue, it's basically a small tablet with limited software - should be a couple hundred option. Could start with should be a phone jammer & not call maker in a car..............but............the whole point is NOT using your hands. And the Ford version is better than most. Easy enough to say "call John on cell" or "dial 555-555-1212" - try that in other cars, you end up with "call name"...."cell".....then it dials. Room for improvement? Certainly, but it ain't ever going to beat a purpose built device like a phone soon. While maybe not the best I do find it acceptable but then the controls I use most when driving are the wheel, gas, and brake. There are even features I like - the nav on the right drivers screen is great, right where it should be = don't have to look to the side to see it. And don't forget we also got some excellent options like adaptive cruise - best thing since sliced bread.
  9. I'll agree to that, could be better. I just must be an oaf, I've not had a problem with the actual touch.............requires firm, but it's okay. The map is a bit cluttered - but a with anything it's a trade off. If they removed the buttons they'd go where? Might require leaving the screen. Won't help us much but my guess is MS will continue to hammer away until they get is nice.............eventually, just like Windoze.
  10. Oh hell no.............Crapple is so far behind in UI development it ain't funny. Take a look at MS's metro on a phone & it's easy to see how far ahead they really are when it comes to a UI. One thing Ford could do is come up with a better term. Is MFT the entire package to include the climate etal "hard" controls or is it simply the touch screen? I know I was a bit confused when I 1st bought the car. While it may not be the best if there is one thing you can say about MS is that they will hammer away until they produce a good product....................maybe late for our cars? Personally I just don't see it as that bad, far better than many I've seen. Main screen with 4 direct controls is better than many others who use a single screen per function.
  11. Define problem? Shows dust & fingerprints like crazy.........problem for some? Maybe, depends on the individual. Personally I see no point in it, could just as easily been leather or material.
  12. Well we were talking buttons - lol - yeah, all that shiny stuff is horrible - really, who thought that was a good idea?
  13. Yeah, it's the same as many other things..................dinosaurs stuck in the tar pit & can't move forward. Human nature, resistant to change. Prime example - when CVTs 1st came to market complaints followed..............to the point they made them fake a shift so the dim bulb at the wheel would feel comfortable. Just left 3 years of whining about computer shifted manual transmissions....................transmission is fine, dinosaurs couldn't adapt. Expected it to behave exactly like auto trans. I'm fine without the buttons, if nothing else it's easy to clean Really funny for the dinos - ALL (repeat that) physical interfaces are going away - it make take some time but it will happen. Adapt or sink into the tar pit, your call.
  14. Never found the overly compressed Sirius signal to worth a damn - 4 cars & none ever sounded good.................which is why I never have a subscription.
  15. I'll have to admit, if it wasn't on the car when I bought it I would not have gotten it. I actually have to go looking for a place to use it. It is fun, watch people stop & stare when you're sitting there with your arms crossed. Now If I had to parallel park frequently I'd get it - it certainly works real well.
  16. I read it & it's not the best explanation (not knocking the writer, it's tough to describe). You hit the button, drive along & it tells you when it finds a space. It says stop & then reverse - you just sit there. It does it from pretty much the same position a human would when parallel parking..........it's just much faster (it makes no mistakes). You can just let your foot off the brake & it will zip into the space pretty well..............if ya got the nerve. Yeah but that would be real hard to control in a car............touching something, hit a bump = where the hell are you now? Just a guess as to why they use resistive for the screen.
  17. Well maybe someday I'll hit those really big numbers We can all thank Toyota's failed engineering for that one...........blame the floormats.....um, sure. Hit for for ya toyota - everyone who uses drive by wire puts in a brake overide....brakes on & gas cuts. Was that so tough? Not bad enough they're the size of a dime but the all weather ones have a warning stamped in "DO NOT INSTALL OVER EXISTING FLOOR MATS".............yeah, that looks nice
  18. That's the norm these days it seems last couple cars were the same. Really have to use care in the summer heat - glue gets even softer. On the upside makes de-badging easier.
  19. I did not know that, thanks for the tip. Not that I use it much but I'd agree, it's faster than most anyone could hope to be. I seek out places where I can use it - still amazed by how accurate it is. Well I'd prefer Ford not copy anything Gubmint Motors does. It could use some improving but overall it's not that bad once you get used to it. Far better in some respects than my wife's Hyundai - she has one screen, flipping between them is a bit of a PITA (it's better to see some of all 4). I think my favorite is having the nav on the left drivers screen while the main screen has entertainment. Is it perfect? Nah, but I've seen worse. No, no, and f*** NO. Rotary switch for the moonroof is about the dumbest thing ever done. I lived with one of those for a few years - they SUCK. Was that one click or two? Oops, rotated more than one. Not to mention you can't see where the dial is pointed (it would require a massive tilt) Directional buttons okay, rotary? No, no, hell no. I'm fine with no buttons, fewer places for crap to collect. Well they need something on the Mustang...............given it's overall design is from the 12th century Personally I don't really care, the DOT limits the output of the lights so the type matters not. Now if indeed it's true replacement requires a bumper removal.......my tune might change. Would like the 5 door - trunk entry sucks big time. A few other minor changes, but nothings perfect.
  20. Don't forget the doughnuts....................don't call 'em doughnut dollies for nothing.
  21. Doubt it, checked Ford Owner & I have the recall.................do not have any problems with mpg - about 25.6 avg. Build date for mine is 9/2012.
  22. Marketing bullchit, it's a certification period ...........as in Certification Engineering Peter Vasay Certification, but hey Bose sells a ton of equipment but it's better known as Buy Something Else by audiophiles (of which am I not none). You want to pay $$$ for some bullchit certification knock yourself out I really like this load of horsechit - THX engineers spend over 200 hours custom-tuning Lincoln automotive audio systems. Everything from speaker placement and distance to the listener’s position in the car, to the materials used in the vehicle’s interior cabin –along with the size and performance characteristics of each individual speaker are taken into account when designing, building and tuning the THX II Certified Audio system in your Lincoln. That’s why when you’re inside a Lincoln with a THX IICertified system, you’ll hear every musical detail in uncompromised clarity through its available 14-channel 700 watt amplifier. The quiet acoustics of the luxury cabins bring out nuances from your favorite music – nuances that possibly, until now, were heard only by the sound engineer who recorded them. Um, every single audio system in a car has certain placement, certain size, certain quality.............all dependent on cost, so what are they adding again...........oh crap, that's right a certification. Now that's funny right there, I don't care who you are............"nuances............." wouldn't that be dependent on the source or would the magic THX even make AM radio as the "sound engineer" intended LAMO, yeah okay. In audio there are more than a couple companies that are "all hat & no cattle" but two of the leaders are THX & Bose.........though Monster Cable looks to be giving them a run for the money.
  23. Yes it is, it is rubbish all the way around for everything...............ask yourself why do high end makers NEVER pay for it? Simple, it's rubbish. And nobody is going to engineer the vehicle to match the sound, the best (like even the cheapest home AVR does these days) they'll do is use the audio unit to shape the sound to match the vehicle (speaker delays etc)....................which is what they do at some level for every audio system. Speaker placement, size, capability.......all are used to offer the best sound possible @ the given price point. But ain't a damn body changing anything in the car - they have enough trouble fitting in the required equipment once the engineers & designers get through with it. Buy a $100K Lexus & get a Mark Levinson audion system...............have "THX"? No, won't pay for a rubbish label............why should they it's much better. $80 grand Merc gets you a Harmon/Karden....THX? Nope. 7 series? Audi A8? Nope, just Bose. All the way "down" to VW's Fender audio.............number with THX = zero. Reason? Why pay a fee for marketing.
  24. I would rephrase that, build quality is likely to remain the same (very good) - some fit & finish issues along with production improvements (different switches). FWIW - THX is marketing rubbish, pay a fee to be "certified"..............any you wonder why many would take a pass on this.
  25. Not fraud - they give you $500 & take back in the interest, it's a way to suck the dummies in - lol. Sometimes they're whacky - when I bought Ford was offering $1,000 back OR 3.9% if you financed with them. I flat out asked the finance guy "so let me get this straight you're offering me a HIGH rate OR cash back.....say what?" I mean come on....why the hell would I go with Ford again? At least in your case they're offering an incentive to get hosed. If you can manage 48mths then do so - the shorter the loan the better, you end up having equity in the car faster. You beat depreciation - always good with a depreciating asset. On the points to ponder - finance with with Ford & they get the extra $$$ (interest), with the credit union they do...............one sold you the car & one is non-profit - lol (matters little on your end). FWIW - never worry about time for approval (unless your score ain't the best). If you have $$$ down (i.e. trade) you can sign a promissory note @ the dealer. Just means you have x days to bring them a check (usually 3- 5 business days. My credit union did the loan in under 15 minutes........................everyone is faster then the finance people @ car dealerships.
