  1. It's unusual for Ford to be so candid about future product, but Mr Farley has, twice now, hinted at future Mustang product. Remember he tweeted "should we build a road going Mustang GT3?"......then a few months later, the GTD is revealed.

Back in August, he hinted a hybrid Mustang coupe was likely.

    https://fordauthority.com/2023/08/ford-mustang-hybrid-coupe-more-realistic-than-ev-farley/

Given we know Flat Rock's paint process can only cope with low vehicles, we can assume any new product will be a variation of the Mustang coupe line-up, so this $50m could go towards prepping for a hybrid S650.

  2. Bingo! They'll upset a lot of (European) Capri owners if that's what they call the new "sporty EV". Capri, much like Mustang, had a reputation as a bad-ass car, known for its RWD tail swinging antics. Mind you, the last Euro Capri was made in 1987, but it still has a strong following.

They did similar with the Puma. That was originally a cool sporty coupe.......albeit Fiesta based, which is what the Puma is, although a 5 door SUV, not a cool 3 door coupe.

Capri was obviously used in NA on the Fox platform, and in Australia as a Mazda 323 based 2 seat convertible, but neither of these were available in the Capri's "home" market.

  3. The problem is, people read a headline and assume it to be true.

Take a look at the window sticker in the Ford Authority link. It also states Sync 3 and an 8" screen. That doesn't sound like the new screens in S650. I suspect someone with Photoshop just wanted their 5 minutes of fame.

Also, have a watch of this video. At the reveal Ed Krenz specifically states the only different between the Dark Horse engine (the HP starts with a 5) and the GT is that the DH gets forged conrods. BOTH get the dual intakes and dual throttle body setup. He also states the GT will have "480 plus, and the reason I said plus is that one of our competitors has 485 and we don't like to be second....."

  4. OK, the UK market is, in relative terms, tiny. But when the S550 was launched here, sales were 60/40 in favour of the V8. By the time the '18 was launched, that became 90/10 in favour of the V8.......to the extent that Ford UK dropped the Ecoboost and the V8 is the only S550 you can buy now.

That being said, I have no issue with a full EV Fastback or convertible. The engine never defined what a pony car was, it was the body style......a great looking, sleek 2+2 coupe or convertible with a long hood and a short deck. An EV Mustang can still be a pony car.

Sounds like Ford has the same "V8 problem" as GM does with the Corvette- Legacy customers who demand a V8 even though a V8 is no longer needed.

Need has nothing to do with it. A Mustang is a purchase made with the heart, not the head. Nobody needs anything more than 4 cylinders in a car but plenty of people want 8 cylinders.

Problem is that 2.3 sells like a bucket of shit internationally, people who buy Mustang want the V8, that’s why Ford desperately tries to put fake V8 sound into the interior….

    Wanna change that?
Rebadge as Ford Capri RS 3100  with Powerboost 3.0 EB TTV6, you will drive the Brits nuts….

    Absolutely this!

And that was my point, doing a little more research, the 80/20 split in favour of the V8 was for early S550 sales here in the UK. By the time the '18+ facelift came out, it was 95/5 in favour of the V8.......and then the Ecoboost was dropped from the model line-up completely and the V8 is now all that's offered. Rightly or wrongly, people expect a V8 in their Mustang. It was what made it stand out from the rest. Customers would put up with the rest of the car's shortcomings (at least compared to its more expensive European rivals) because of it character, and much of that centres on the V8.

Ford have already announced they will only sell EVs or hybrids in Europe from 2026. So, it's possible they will offer a pure ice V8 for 3 years, 2023 to 2026. If the V8 hybrid isn't a thing, then I suspect they will stop selling the Mustang over here completely after 2026.

However, I'm still hopeful. You might have missed this snippet from an Australian article when a Ford Engineer, in Australia for the new Ranger launch had this to say:

    https://www.motor1.com/news/578055/ford-confirms-next-gen-mustang/

"While the V8 is sticking around, Jammoul indicates that Ford is cleaning up the engine's emissions. "What we need to do, though, is make the V8 more environmentally friendly and you need to make sure it’s regulatory compliant. And that’s absolutely something we have worked on and will certainly have in the next-generation Mustang," he told Wheels.

This statement might fit with the rumors about the new Mustang's powertrain having hybrid assist"

No, this doesn't confirm a V8 hybrid, but it does indicate Ford are doing whatever is necessary to keep the V8 alive in countries with strict emissions regs........and unless they're going to strangle the V8 in a 1970's style, I'd bet that means hybridization.

Ford is referring to it as all new. Borg is speculating over on GMI that the 5.0 hybrid has been cancelled which seems plausible given that it wont be available on the 24 model. Maybe a casualty along with the all wheel drive model.

I hope he's wrong, or S650 will be dead in the water as far as the rest of the world is concerned. Ecoboosts just didn't sell that well (here in the UK, 80% of sales were for the V8)...........so unless the V8 hybrid makes it over here, they may as well forget overseas sales :(

I was told there is a number at which when ICE sales fall below a certain amount the ICE plug will be pulled even if it isn't at the end of the scheduled life cycle, Ford also expects there will be a short burst of high content V8 sales after that announcement.

Well, that may well be a self fulfilling prophecy as the current chip shortage has meant Flat Rock has been down for more than 2 months this year already. I suspect there will be even less S550s built this year than last :(

It will debut before that, that is close to the onsite date of it, bigger announcement is April 17, 2024.

Which would be it's 60th Anniversary.  Although I'm intrigued by what they would announce on that date? I don't expect a full EV coupe until the 8th Gen/S750.......and the hybrid needs to come pretty soon after launch if Mustang is still to be sold to "rest of the world" markets, especially Europe.

I too, expect it to debut before that. In fact, I'd expect a debut before the end of this year with first deliveries around April 17th 2023, if not earlier.

  10. The AWD Mustang rumors started when the Ford patent for a hybrid V8 design was published. This showed electric motors powering the front wheels.......so if paired with a RWD V8 Mustang, it'd be effectively AWD.

The Mach E is already available with AWD, but Ford will not produce an I4/PHEV version of the Mach E.......as it's a dedicated EV platform.

  11. Good find, thank you!

Indeed, I have high confidence S650 will keep it's Ecoboost & Coyote engines (with the addition of hybrid electrification) for at least the duration of S650's production run (8 years?)

The question will then be would there still be enough demand for an ICE S750 or will that be purely a full EV. The S550/S650 platform would be pretty old by 2030 and my assumption is a full EV Mustang would require a unique platform not shared with S650. Perhaps Ford could, if ICE demand is still there, continue to build an ICE S650 and EV S750 concurrently, although I think the chances are slim.

Thinking about this a little bit (could be very wrong) a longer wheelbase and a larger footprint would make it easier to stay in front increasing CAFE limits. If there is a longer wheelbase, the Mustang could take on more of the Buckie Knudsen styled Mustang, still retro but homage to a slightly later version?

Once again, I’m overthinking this and probably not worth a response…….

Any S650 talk is worthy of a response ?

An increase in wheelbase is unlikely though, isn't it?

If S650 was CD6-based, as originally intended, I'd think it was a possibility, but with S650 now being a heavily updated S550 I don't see hard points or wheelbase changing from what we have now.

As for the race car, interesting that it'll be a Coyote based 5.0.  The current GT4 Mustang uses a cross plane crank n/a version of the 5.2. As the engines have to be production based, I guess this is another pointer that the 5.2 will die with the last S550 GT500.
