The high voltage battery in my 2021 AWD Escape SEL Hybrid (build date Aug 24) is located under the right rear passenger floorboard. Definitely -not- below the rear cargo space. And the AWD system -is- mechanical. As described above by bzcat.... This mockup shows the arrangement:
