Question about the oil pressure on a 2001 G.M. It has around 168K miles on it. Reg. 4.6 2V motor. When the engine comes to an idle, the oil pressure gauge drops to about nothing. When you start driving, it comes back up. What are some thoughts on this? Oil pump?

Thanks for any help.

Hi I had the same problem with my 92 mustang gt. It was the sending unit on the side of the motor that was faulty, I don't know if GMs are the same but I would check this and or the gauge before looking into the pump don't drop the pan unless it's necessary. You can usually test this by screwing an oil presure tester into the sending unit port after you unscrew the oem unit if it's a manual gauge, if you don't have one go to an auto parts store and buy a cheap manual gauge this will work instead of a tester if it's an electric one use an ohm meter and manual to check the readings, could just be a dirty connection. If all this fails try a heavier oil if it goes up then it might be your main bearings. Check the simple things first.... best of luck, and happy holidays.

From under hood sharply rev the engine up and down. Listen for deep knocking sound at the transtion from up rev to off throttle. If you have that your bearings are worn. Time for a rebuild. If not then it is a faulty sending unit or gauge
