SRC ESCAPE
My brothers ranger has 95,000 miles 3.0 5 spd. It runs great but detonates or pings under load with regular. What can be done to get rid of this detonation? Don't want to run premium. Can the timing be adjusted? What are options? Thanks
OAC_Sparky
My brothers ranger has 95,000 miles 3.0 5 spd. It runs great but detonates or pings under load with regular. What can be done to get rid of this detonation? Don't want to run premium. Can the timing be adjusted? What are options? Thanks It is a common problem to older Rangers, quite often it is a dirty MAF sensor (assuming the air filter is clean). You will need to remove the MAF sensor from the tube (you usually need the anti-tamper torx bit to get it out) and GENTLY clean it with rubbing alcohol let it dry and reinstall. What happens is dirt accumilates on the sensor wires in the MAF and underreports the airflow into the engine so the ECU reponds by leaning it out which causes the pinging. At the same time, check the wires on the harness/plug going to the MAF sensor, they also have a tendency to flex/fatigue from vibration and will cause the same problem (improper MAF sensor voltage). They sell the pigtail (plug) replacement kits at the dealer -- it comes with a new pigtail and some weatherproof shrinkwrap; you have to solder it in. But try cleaning the MAF first, it doesn't cost you anything but 5 minutes of work and $.05 of alcohol.
