PREMiERdrum
A French maker of electric vehicles has decided to set up its North American headquarters near Ohio State University. Venturi Automobiles will design, engineer and produce electric vehicles, operating from a space in the TechColumbus building, 1275 Kinnear Rd. The company is coming to Columbus to be near Ohio State's Center for Automotive Research. Initially, the company will have just a few employees, but Ohio State and TechColumbus officials hope that the local presence will eventually be similar to the 70 workers the company has in offices in France and Monaco. "This adds another important advanced energy asset to the region and further demonstrates our commitment to becoming a world recognized leader in advanced energy manufacturing and energy storage," said Ted Ford, president and CEO of TechColumbus, in a statement. Venturi makes several types of electric vehicles, from high-performance sports cars to small urban vehicles. The company has worked with another French automaker, PSA Peugeot Citron, to help develop electric delivery vehicles. Another electric-car company, Coda Automotive, hopes to bring a battery factory to Columbus. That plan, which would lead to more than 1,000 jobs, is contingent on receiving a federal loan of more than $500 million. No information is immediately available about how much Venturi is investing or whether it will seek government aid.
