Ford Edge guns for import crowd only

This week, Ford began showing the Edge off to automotive media in California and kicked off its production of the vehicle at its factory in Oakville, Ontario.

The stakes couldn't be much higher for a new vehicle. Ford is counting on the Edge, which hits showrooms in November, to score big in the emerging crossover segment and convince people who have given up on Ford to take a second look at the brand.

"I'd like to use it as a halo vehicle," Mark Fields, president of Ford's Americas group, said during a dinner with reporters Monday night. "Getting people into the showroom is a really important priority."

Several of the noontime passers-by who stopped to look at a bevy of Edges parked along the San Francisco waterfront Monday said they liked the vehicle, but still would not consider buying a Ford -- or any other American car, for that matter.

That sort of lukewarm praise is not what Ford is looking for with the Edge, but analysts who test drove the vehicle said Ford should not be discouraged by a few Northern California skeptics.

good... I hope they're not going to change what will turn out to be a great vehicle just to appease a few folks from the Frisco/SoHo crowd :baby:

I know they're dying for as much varied feedback as possible but Northern Cal is an awful place to test-market this thing. one guy said he didn't care how great it was if it wasn't a hybrid. too bad buddy, but if he really wants that he can wait til around '09
