jfischetti
I have been struggling for a while with the fact that the Tesla Destination Charger (silver, Gen2) would not charge my Aviator Grand Touring model. I share the charger with my dad who has a Porsche Cayenne Hybrid and he has no issue using the charger. We both use a Lectron adapter to allow us to convert the Tesla NACS charger to the J1772. Recently I found a post on a Jeep forum where a Wrangler owner was having the same issue as the Aviator, and he posted the solution. It seems that the later models of the Tesla destination charger (Gen3-4, White) are set to be more universal for all cars (they work with the Aviator), but the Gen2 charger (silver) is one of the earlier models and is really only for Teslas. BUT! There is a dip switch inside the charger that is totally undocumented in the manual and it alters the communication method the charger talks to cars. Dip Switch 2 in the Up position is Normal (Tesla protocol) Dip Switch 2 in the Down position is Legacy and allows all cars to use the charger, including Tesla. I am posting this in this forum so more cars that need to use these Tesla chargers can learn how to make the adjustment to “Legacy Mode” You will need a Tamperproof T10 and T20 hex bits to open up the charger. The dip switch is easily accessible in the lower left of the charger. Hope this helps someone. Cheers.
