According to your criteria "safe, reliable and economical " a new Tarus or Tarus X seems to fit the bill. I know the Freestyle soon to be Tarus X isnt on anyones "Gotta Have" list. But every single person that I have talked to that actually bought one absolutely loves it. Also the Edge is best in class for safety, about as econimical as anything in its class. As for reliability, well I really cant comment on that because its so new. It seems from your posting that you think someone other than Detroit makes this perfect vehicle. So I am curious, you must have something in mind, what is it?

Zana I agree. I for one, LIKE , Read that LIKE the Fusion a great deal. I would LOVE to see an SVT version. I personally think the Mondeo looks a bit Robocop for my tastes.

Personally I think a sport model of the 500/Tarus would go a long way in enhancing this cars image. Maybe it doesnt need to be a knock down killer machine, but a nice sport /appearance package wouldent hurt. A little firmer suspension ,a little more power, a real shifter, nice set of wheels and tires, maybe black out some of that chrome and I think it would sell. I think this car needs something to boost its image. A high dollar/low volume machine wouldent get the job done for Ford, not matter how much we all would like it. As for the comment where the Fusion needs to have more horespower than all of the competition. I dont agree. HP alone doesnt make a complete package. I had a Contour SVT and although it wasnt the highest HP car out there, it was way more fun to drive than my buddies Maxima, that had a lot more horsepower, but for some reason couldent seem to hang with that little 2.5. Which, by the way, I never had a problem with the cams.

Since it has been brought up, heres what it would look like with just a 2 bar grill, I personally feel the 3 bar thing has been over played Agree it should have a little rake to the front end, maybe a more pronounced bumper, (slightly) And the rear quarter needs some work, But overall, a very good profile. There wouldent be a lot of hauling capacity or towing capacity. If thats what you want, then you would obviously buy a truck. But for the vast majority of buyers who want to go to the local Lowes /Home Depot to pick up some plants, bags of mulch, a few 2x4's or a sheet of plywood, there really isnt a fuel efficent solution. The Ranger is the best there is, but its not that great.

I was reading on the forum where there may be a resurgance in "Car" based trucks. With gas at 2.50/gal and most of us in no real need of a heavy duty truck, (and no new Ranger in site) they make sense to me. Since we arent getting the Aussie based Falcon UTE, I thought I would play around with a Fusion based Ranchero.

I always liked the half cab Bronco, And , since I hear they are actually thinking of building it, I chopped the roof off of the prototype. Not as nice as some of the real Photo Shoppers on here,. but good enough to get the idea fm
