  1. that will be the only noticeable change from the concept - the rear roofline / trunk

Wagon is also coming, and probably so it a convertible.

    Igor

    I'm glad they're changing it.

I'd assume a convertible model would come eventually as well, like you said. It'd then become a true 3 series competitior.

  2. you may be right, however remember the hoopla on this site touting Ford's "mid Box"????? To date ZERO, and I mean ZERO inquiries.....so it remains to be seen, Fords issue may have been related to its cost.....

    Isn't mid-box fleet only anyways?

  3. "The only company a Ford fan could bash" Not so sure about that one, but OK.

I wonder what type of changes are being brought about so fast? I wonder how drastic said changes are, because these are basically unheard of in the industry?

I'm thinking it's just a material upgrade, not a design change. It's said they're unheard of because of how quickly they're being done.

  4. You forgot to add "in my opinion."

I think the Avenger looks good from the outside, so to does the Calibur and frankly as minivans go, I think both the Caravan and Town and Country look decent, no worse than an Odyssey.

The Compass to me is just ugly, but the Patriot is decent looking and a better interior would help it a lot.

The Sebring needs a complete redesign, the hood just ruins it.

I'm not a big fan of Avenger or Caliber. I agree with your Caravan and T&C assesment. I think Honda ruined the decent looking Odyssey with it's newest refresh (bigger taillights are my biggest gripe).

I also agree with your Compass/Patriot assessment.

Sebring is ugly any way you put it, IMO.

  5. Chrysler would be smart to just put the Compass out of its misery. The Patriot shows promise, but not the Compass. I live in Metro Detroit and one hardly sees a Compass anymore. I'm seeing lots of Nitros, but no Compasses. Probably be wise to end the Liberty too as its a heavy slug in high fuel cost times. A buddy of mine had a Liberty and what a horrible ride and horrid fuel mileage. He has a Trailblazer now and it has horrid interior, but great ride and better fuel mileage than that Liberty.

I'm not bashing Chrysler as I love their new Town and Country and wouldn't mind owning one at all. A very nice minivan. I like it more and more as I see so many on the streets now. Great interior IMO.

If I were buying vehicle today, the Chrysler Town and Country, and Chevy Impala would be on my considertaion list along with the Ford Taurus, Mercury Sable, and Fusion Hybrid when it comes out.

I too think the Compass should just go away. I believe Liberty should stay, but it shouldn't be a Nitro rebadge as it has become.

  6. I know People here love to bash Chrysler...........maybe because they are the only company any Ford Fan could legitimately bash..................but Ceberus isn't screwing around, after the quick redo of the Avenger and Sebring interior, the COmpass and Patriot will also get new interiors as well.

I'm glad they're doing this. I'm surprised those vehicle's interiors passed inspection as well, especially in this time where quality is everything.

  7. The 1.8-litre VVT-i engine is found in models across the line-up, but can suffer from excessive oil burning from as few as 50,000-60,000 miles, according to main dealers. The problem is being blamed on the piston ring design, and Toyota says that any unit consuming more than one litre of oil every 1,000 miles.

Bosses claim this is part of the manufacturer’s ongoing customer care policy. So, if your Avensis, RAV4 or MR2 has covered only moderate mileage, but you feel it is drinking too much oil, the firm recommends you get in touch with your local franchised dealer as soon as possible.

Luxury offshoot Lexus also appears to be suffering, as some 2.2-litre diesel models have been forced to have their cylinder heads removed and de-coked after as few as 20,000 miles.

    Interesting.

  8. RMC, one of your posts above, where you mentioned Ford bringing over european models and Badging them as Mercuries is a excellant idea. Mercury Has no compact car anymore like they did back in 1995-2000

    1. Tracer

    2. Mystique

    3. Sable

They should bring back a few european models and call one the Tracer, but then im sure people would wonder where the escort is, Maybe the escort and focus would coexist just like the corrola and yaris are. Or when the european Focus comes to America, They could give the Focus a sibling which would go to Mercury and call it something else besides Tracer, But i do think Mercury needs its own compact car.

But it would be nice to see

    1. Tracer, Lynx or botcat as Local1111 has mentioned, maybe even Comet, Cyclone, Monarch or Medalian.

    2. Milan

    3. Sable

Anyways, If ford really wants to keep mercury alive, then this is a good idea. But for starters, give Mercury a compact car just the old days when Mercury was in its good days.

A smaller vehicle for Mercury may be a good idea, especially given the current times. A Verve counterpart would be appropriate, I think.

  9. For some reason, at times Ford makes breakout vehicles that define a new segment (Mustang, Taurus, Explorer and soon Flex hopefully), other times they seem to hold back, wait and react....ever so slowly. Or worse, like a grape, let a good vehicle die on the vine. I did a chop of a Zephyr coupe two years ago. Lincoln has had a MK IX show car several years ago. Why can't they revisit the obvious before the competition does? Are they waiting for Lexus to come out with a new SC400? I'm sure it's a "buisness case" where the bean counters and focus groups don't get it.

That chop looks great as usual, Tim.

  10. I have already candied my interior radio bezel and covered my seats it Ford Blue, and I think it looks great. DSCI0213.jpgDSCI0205.jpg Now I am considering candy blue on my grille and all other chromed surfaces of my exterior, and with the help of another BOF user was able to aquire this rendering of what it might look like! blue_chrome.jpg What do you guys think?

    The interior looks nice.

  11. What could/would be Ford fastest answer to Cadillac's well received CTS Coupe (CTC?)? How could Ford get Lincoln something to compete, head to head, with that Cadillac, with an extreme short development cycle? One answer would be a Lincoln version based off the Mustang. Yea, stretch it a few inches (to make a usable rear seat), give it some new skin (to make it look like a Lincoln), but not much else would be required.

    Here's a chop I did a while back.

I'm going to update it soon, giving it MKR cues though.

  12. Here is the quote, its from 2005 I think or 2004 when the last T-bird was getting shut down

Ford Division president, Steve Lyons stating: "We promised all along that this Thunderbird would have a limited production run, and we're being true to our word. Thunderbird was a terrific image builder for the Ford brand showroom at a time when we needed it. Now, we're in the midst of a major product onslaught, including more news on the Mustang at this month's New York Auto Show. At Ford, we're fortunate to have several dream cars, including the new Ford GT and Ford Mustang. For now, the Thunderbird nameplate will be placed on our shelf. But we'll keep it polished for future use

I figured it was an old quote. I remember reading that one a while back.

  13. I really hope not, I think Volvo adds a great deal to Ford. They make a lot of platforms, as well as safety features. They are kinda like Mazda of Europe.

Like I said before, I'd think Ford would work out some sort of agreement with the new owners to continue to share technologies. Either that or retain some percentage of ownership.

  14. Ford already had a chunk of Mazda before Nasser was running the company. All he did was increase the percentage. Wikipedia says 15%.

It was Ford's partial ownership of Mazda that caused the Probe to happen (1989-1997). It was a platform-twin of the Mazda MX-6. The original MX-6 was a sedan-like coupe. The 1993 version was much closer to the (also new) Probe's aero shape.

    I didn't realize that.
