Roof Rack Knobs a Pain to Loosen

I have a new 2008 Mariner Hybrid with the roof rack, and tried to adjust the crossbars yesterday. The knobs were almost frozen in place. It took an offset screwdriver through the knob loops to get them off. The vehicle has been garaged and only been through some light rain. After a treatment with WD-40 they are working smoothly though. I'm not sure if this was due to corrosion or some kind of Loctite applied to keep them tight during shipping.

If you haven't adjusted your crossbars, check them out and lube the screws before you need them and are somewhere without tools.

Those knobs are a pain in the ass! I had trouble with them when I had my 2003 Escape and my aunt just bought a Mariner and wanted them adjusted and we could not quickly do it by hand at a moments notice.

I agree. Right after I bought my 2008, I tried to adjust them. They were locked tight in position. I used a pair of pliers to loosen them up (ruined one of them). The design of my 2003 were much easier to use.

File it under, if it ain't broke...why are you trying to fix it?
