scuzzi
While still at Ford, what apprenticeship program could you get into that would allow to log the hours you need while still doing 40-48hrs. As far as nothing out well if your looking for work that really could be done by well train monkeys at 32+hr yah you wont find much. There are jobs out there that can pay the same or more it's just a matter of what your willing to do to get one. Again 100k is not for everyone especially if your debts are high, if there not well either way is a gamble granted one though just may free from the Ford trap. As well don't get me wrong I commend the Brothers and Sisters who put in 30+yrs at the plant especially when they started the work was 10 times harder. For me its also about job satisfaction and I can tell I never go "Wow another Edge over there or Oh Look a Flex" and feel proud. This could be mine and many others who can, there last chance ate getting out and doing something else. Heck how many started at Ford with the " Only for 5yrs than Iam out attitude" I know I was one saying that. I was trying for a fire department job. I was at ford until I could get hired and was also saying 'only 5 years'. After all, you don't hear about people quitting after their 5 years. After 7 and 1/2 years I got my call, I took a $20,000 paycut to leave. I never looked back. The day I quit I couldn't bring myself to actually go on the line. If you have something to do, then you should be okay. If you are looking for a trade, there are jobs out there, I would recommend trying to line something up before leaving. The big ford paycheck was nice, but waking up pain free is even nicer. I stay at this forum because I have friends that are still on the line and working and hear what is going on from them. I still defend the position that autoworkers deserve the money they get whenever people I meet complain that they get too much money. The question you have to ask yourself, is it worth it in the long run to cut now and leave or try to weather the storm?
foxrun
Can someone explain to me why skill trades hasn't felt any of the pain. What a joke this company and union are. Edited October 10, 2008 by foxrun
OAC_Sparky
Can someone explain to me why skill trades hasn't felt any of the pain. What a joke this company and union are. And what pain might that be? The only weekends we get are because of Appendix T's, same with the down weeks. Contractors are in, we're in. Don't worry, when the 472 kits are in, the contractor are out, we're out. I'm already scheduling side work. :happy feet:

FK partizan
With the recent rumours of the GM/Chrysler merger, and even outright bankruptcy for the Big 3, I couldn't help but ponder the similarities between the unregulated discounted mortage fiasco in the states which is bringing down wall street and destroying the lives of the middle and lower classes, and the bankruptcy loophole which is open to the Big 3, where they could resurface as "leaner and meaner" companies and tear up all hard earned negotiated union agreements which have taken decades to achieve. This in my opinion would be the crime of the century as our pensions, jobs and wages are at stake. Another example of corporate/capitalist/shareholder interests superseding worker's rights. So much for dad's 38+ years of "loyal service." Perhaps the heavily regulated (read socialist) markets of some european countries are not the embodiment of evil that they have been made out to be by western hyper-capitalist propaganda. Some how I don't think this would fly in france for one minute. Quote from BusinessWeek: "Plenty of observers believe that this suffering would be worthwhile, of course, if a stronger company emerged from bankruptcy. As airlines and steelmakers have done, GM could use Chapter 11 to rewrite union contracts, potentially enabling it to slash retiree benefits and close plants without having to pay furloughed workers" Edited October 12, 2008 by FK partizan
electrocutioner
FREEP is reporting that GM approached Ford a few days back to see about a merger first. Apparently Ford is planning to stay on course...for now. Ford wants to build on strengths for the moment On another note, this thread is over 200 pages and nearly 3 yrs old.I accidently clicked on page one and couldn't help but notice not much has changed. The discussion was downweeks from the dying days of the Freestar, while foxrun was being a troll....why does anybody give her the time of day?
