Ford has too many assembly plants as it is. Do you honestly think they would buy another one?

well yes maybe. I heard this from my supervisor acouple weeks ago. He said a couple engineers were in town that he knew from Michigan. They went to dinner and thats what they were saying. Shit who knows. Time will tell.

Heard ford bought Chrysler plant in Fenton mo. and retooling for mustang...everyone in Kc talking about it.

Was talking to 1 of the engineers at AAI and he said they were thinking about bringing back the Couger redesigned like they did with the mustang (the retro look)!!!!

Bill Ford Jr. said in 2004 when we (AAI) got the Mustang from Dearborn that such an iconic car would always be built in the metro Detroit area. Could it go to Wayne if AAI gets closed down in the next few years?......It could happen. Right now it's a coin flip for the odds on AAI closing in the next couple of years OR getting a third vehicle and running near capacity again. Ford did a feasibility study a few years back to see how long it would take to move the Mustang to another facility. They tested at Wixom before it closed, and decided it would only take 7 weeks to move the car if they ever needed to. If they have open capacity at another plant, once it gets re-tooled for the new car, it can be launched in under 2 months! I don't seriously think Ford would buy another assembly plant when they have too much excess capacity. Mazda would have to leave AAI to force Ford to pull the Mustang out of here.(Unless they were giving us a different Ford product to build) Mazda has nowhere else in the U.S. to build their cars, but they could ship the 6 from Japan. Ford still owns 13% of Mazda, but if they ever sell that stake in Mazda, then we are in big trouble at AAI.

The Mazda Tribute is built at KCAP.

rn4, I was referring to Mazda car production, not SUV's. The Mazda 6 is also made in Japan, and they use the name Atenza for it there. Mazda has said they have thought about pulling out of AAI, but with nowhere for the 6 to be relocated immediately, their options are limited, unless they decide just to ship them from Japan. ( They used to ship the Mazdaspeed 6 from Japan 2-3 years ago.) The 6's sales were down to 40,000 last year, an all time low. however the Mazda 3 (from Japan) sells very well and a new model, the 2 (from Japan) will be introduced this year. If for some reason they decide to make either model in the states, we'd have a shot at making it. The Tribute is a very low volume vehicle compared to the Escape and Mariner. The Fusion / Milan / MKZ are all built off of the Mazda 6 platform, and again the Mazda is the lowest volume seller. The Mazda 3 (built off the Focus platform) is actually a high volume car. (over 100,000 sold) The new 2 will be built off the Fiesta platform and may be a good seller with gas prices rising. Mazda has great cars, but bad marketing, bad lease pricing and dealer networks. It's very tricky trying to please two companies at the same time, with two different assembly processes. Luckily most Ford workers don't have to worry about building for two companies, but it's what we're used to at AAI.
