Lane Departure Warning

This feature is designed to warn the driver via a vibration in the steering wheel if the front

view camera detects an unintentional drift out of the lane.

The camera system continuously monitors the vehicle’s position relative to the road

markings. If the vehicle drifts from the centre of the lane, and the system does not detect an

obvious lane-change manoeuvre or use of the indicators, the vibration alert is triggered. This

alert is reinforced by a graphic in the instrument cluster.

The system is deactivated at speeds below 60 km/h so it does not interfere in urban

conditions. The driver is able to adjust the system’s sensitivity (two levels) and the intensity

of the alert (three levels), as well as having the option of turning it off completely.

Lane Keeping Aid

The all-new Focus is the first Ford vehicle to offer this advanced feature, which extends the

functionality of the Lane Departure Warning system by using the EPAS system to actively

steer the vehicle back into the lane, rather than just triggering an alert.

The system is designed to steer the vehicle very smoothly and precisely back into lane, and

can easily be overridden by the driver if a lane-change was intended. The driver can select

two levels of sensitivity, and can also opt to turn the system off.

Driver Alert

This feature uses the camera system to detect when a driver is becoming tired or even falling

asleep. By monitoring the vehicle’s position relative to the road markings, the system can

recognise the kind of sideways drifting which is typical when a driver is feeling drowsy or

their concentration levels start to drop.

If the system detects that driver performance is reduced, a two-stage warning process is

triggered. Firstly, a warning message is displayed in the instrument cluster, together with an

audible chime; if the driver continues to show tired behaviour, a permanent warning is shown

which the driver must acknowledge by pressing an OK button.

Traffic Sign Recognition

The system uses the digital camera to identify traffic signs on either side of the road and on

bridges, providing the driver with information about the latest detected speed limit,

cancellation signs and overtaking regulations via the instrument cluster display. The display

can be configured to show the signs in a larger information screen, or in a smaller continuous

output at the top of the display.

To help the driver verify how recent the information is, the displayed sign fades away in a

series of steps as the distance increases from the location of the sign. The driver can also use

the system to help provide a warning about speeding, by configuring the system to flash the

speed limit sign in the display when the vehicle is exceeding the currently displayed limit by

a set amount (this threshold can be varied by the driver).

Low Speed Safety System

The all-new Focus is the first Ford vehicle to feature the Low Speed Safety System, which is

designed to help drivers avoid the kind of low speed collisions that are very common in

congested urban driving conditions, when a car drives into the rear of the vehicle in front.

The Low Speed Safety System uses a forward-facing infra-red laser mounted next to the rear

view mirror to detect objects in front of the car. The system continuously (100 times per

second) monitors the distance to the vehicle in front and the closing speed, to determine the

risk of a collision.

If, for example, the car in front brakes suddenly, and the system foresees that a collision is

imminent, it pre-charges the brakes. If the driver does not react, the brakes are then

automatically applied and the throttle is released.

The Low Speed Safety System is active at speeds below 30 km/h. If the relative speed

difference between the two vehicles is less than 15 km/h, then the system may help the driver

avoid the collision entirely. For relative speeds between 15 and 30 km/h, the objective is to

reduce speed as much as possible prior to the impact.

Speed Limiter

System allows drivers to set their own personal speed limit, so that

in demanding conditions – such as in unfamiliar city streets, or passing through extended

roadworks on the motorway – they can concentrate on the road ahead without the worry of

unintentionally driving too fast. This supports safer, less stressful driving, and reduces the

chance of receiving unwanted speeding tickets.

By using enhanced Cruise Control switches on the steering wheel, the driver can adjust their

personal top speed within a range of 30 to 180 km/h. When the vehicle reaches the pre-set

speed, the engine management system intervenes to prevent further acceleration.

If required, the driver can override their chosen limit – to overtake, for example – by pressing

hard on the accelerator. Once the vehicle speed drops back under the chosen speed limit, the

system automatically re-activates again.

Pretty cool although one can easily see why all those alert systems are not on the Amreican car given the wide variation in road design in the States. I think you can scratch the EcoBoost engine from that list. The American version is getting the 2.0 ecoboost that is built in Spain and I have no doubt that it has a speed limiter on it as does almost every car on the market and I thought I read somewhere that the Focus speed limiter is adjustable.

Remember that in Europe, this class of car is more than the equivalent of our midsize (Fusion-Taurus) class. It only figures that their cars will have a higher content owing to what the culture is used to. I know to many of us these features are desirable, but here in the States, Ford has researched and made the decision that there is not a sound case to add them at this time. This may change soon if fuel does what most analysts say it is going to do.
