If you're as excited as we are by the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1, it might be wise to understand the historical significance of those three letters at the end of Chevy's retrofied muscle car. Way back in 1969 – a year some consider to be the apogee of Camaro history – the automaker built just 69 ZL1s, each powered by an aluminum-block 427-cubic-inch V8 that was otherwise unavailable in the Camaro and built specifically for drag racing.

The '69 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is highly coveted by collectors, and a perfectly stunning example was auction at the 2012 Barrett-Jackson event in Scottsdale. Though this particular ZL1 saw plenty of use on the drag strip, it's been completely restored to like-new condition. We just drove the new 2012 ZL1 (full report coming soon), so we were keenly interested in seeing this one cross the auction block. The final bid came in at $410,000, putting the actual sale at $451,000.

I wonder if there are any 69's left that havent been customized or restored?

Closest all Mondeo's will come to being a classic when 100% end up in a crusher, will be a 99 cents recycled tin can of classic coke

+1 Gotta agree, the Camaro is the photo looks absolutely awesome $400,000 for a Camaro!!, l would love an old Stingray or old 60's Stang like this GT500 that cost just $4,195 how much would this be worth today? Can't see folk swooning over, pinning for a Mk1 boring dull bland Mondeo or a shitty Prius in 50 years time, never ever!! 100% all of them will end up crushed, recycled becoming a nice recycled classic red Coca Cola tin instead (Every dark cloud has a silver lining).

Both my Old Skool Fords are both bog stand unmolested, can't stand those gaudy flames that extend from wheel arches. My Capri is in better condition than when Uncle Henry made it back in 72, the Mk1 Escort has been under the blowtorch a bit since l brought it in 81.

Just amazing how much these classic old skool RWD muscle cars are worth these days, some classic cars have almost tripled in value in the last few years. They are a real appreciating asset so much better than banks or risky stock markets. But nearly everybody l know that owns a classic just loves the car for what it is, and making money is the last thing that think about they don't give a toss about money.

So, do you think an "old skool cool" 2012 F-150 will ever be worth anything in 50 years? I don't. Base trim Cortinas (or base trim pretty much anything else - even '97 Mustangs) will never be worth anything either. Even my '97 Cobra probably won't ever be worth a whole heck of a lot. It's not about the drive configuration. It's about the rarity and desirability.

Front-wheel drive and quite desirable, by the way:

Beautiful Camaro. Only liked the 67-69 Camaro's though. Ever since 1970, I've never been much a fan of their style.

Of course, my 1st car was a 1969 Camaro. Purchased used, but had a 327cid with only 10K on the clock and 3spd on the floor. Boy that car was fun in the summer, but horrible in the winter with the meats on the back.

Aww come on. My dad's daily driver in upstate NY from 1969-74 was a Stingray. :shift:

Only a heavenly looking bog standard very reliable cars of great substance gets chosen as God's humble type of car. $690,000 RWD Ford Escort Mk 2 gets that heavenly first choice from his reverence Pope John Pauls II.

MSNBC....

LAS VEGASA light blue old skool kool 1975 Ford Escort GL once owned by Pope John Paul II sold for $690,000 Saturday to a Houston multimillionaire who said he plans to put it in a museum he wants to build in his hometown.

"To me, it's a piece of history," said John O'Quinn, 62, a Baptist who said he has a collection of about 600 vehicles. "What a great human being Pope John Paul was."

I'm so glad it will be preserved and be in a major city in the U.S." he said.

Seller claims he's in the poor house

The seller, Jim Rich, 41, of Sugar Grove, Ill., became emotional about giving up the car to pay bankruptcy debts to his father.

"I've been smothered by greed and courts," he said.

Rich bought the car for $102,000 at an auction in 1996, and said he promised the pope when he received the keys at the Vatican that he would display the vehicle proudly at his Chicago West restaurant and never part with it.

It began at $150,000, after Kruse failed repeatedly to get any of the 350 people at the Las Vegas Hilton auto auction to offer $1 million. It stalled several times while Kruse exhorted bidders to be generous.Standing with holes in his shoes and holding a buttonless blue blazer together at the front with his left hand, he pulled a food stamp card from his wallet and said he been using it for about nine months to buy groceries.

The car came with what Kruse said were several papal possessions: carved wooden rosary beads, a box of wooden matches, a candy tin and a dashboard medallion bearing the likeness of St. Maria Goretti, patron of youth, young women, purity and victims of rape.

Built 30 years ago at a Ford plant in Cologne, Germany, the car sold Saturday in what auctioneer Dean Kruse said was original papal condition — no hubcaps, no air conditioning, no radio, but with several nicks and dents.
