Future F-Series

Okay. The Blue Oval's competitors have kicked everything up a notch. It's now time to fight back with content, Content, CONTENT!

What the next F-150 will need:

1) A new engine, with displacements ranging from 5.4L to 6.2L. This sucker should be DOHC, have variable valve timing, and cylinder deactivation. Fuel economy will only become ever more important in the coming years. For a small V8, you can use the current MOD 4.6L, hopefully with a DOHC design, and pushing 300 hp.

2) A diesel V8. Displacement should be above 4.0L, with torque output at 400 lb/ft. We're talking direct-injection, twin-turbo, variable-vane. Smooth, and powerful- the whole works. This one has to be right if you want to finally convince America to drive diesels and help reduce our dependency on foreign oil.

3) A new transmission. If the current 6-AT can handle heavy-duty work, then use it.

4) A Locking rear differential. GM just added these to their Silverado and Sierra pickups. I think these would be a major asset, as they can increase traction without decreasing towing capacity. MotorWeek has an article on the Eaton differential (currently used by GM) HERE!

With increasing gas prices, it is high time that Ford paid some real attention to the mid-size truck segment. Call it the F-100.

What the F-100 will need:

1) A strong V6 as the base engine. The 3.7L version of the Cyclone V6 would work well, but is there any way to stroke that sucker a bit more?

2) A step-up V8, as per the Explorer. You can use the MOD that I described above, but cylinder deactivation may be a good idea.

3) A locking rear differential would also make sense, but may not be quite as necessary here.

4) A diesel powertrain might not be a bad idea-- I'm thinking a 3.0L V6, perhaps?

And can we please do something about the Ranger? Has it occurred to anyone that the reason for low sales in this segment could be because NOBODY is making any good compact pickups?
