Springer03
Is Ford going to do anything about the brake pads on the Freestyle and the 500's? Owners I have spoken with and dealers are telling me there getting about 24,000 miles on the these rear brake pads most also replacing rotors. I am going to have to spring for ceramic pads very soon. I just wish Ford would address the issue with a better quality pad. Ford Please! Edited July 25, 2006 by Springer03
Jethro Jackson
I have a 2006 Limited AWD and was just told I need new rear brake pads at 19,600 miles. Dealer says normal wear. Mostly highway miles. Fronts have 80% left. I think there's more to the story than Ford is telling us. Perhaps someone on Blueoval can provide some insight. Springer03
Thanks for the information. I hope the new updated pads take care of these problems.
Ralph Greene
The rear brakes on my Montego also throw off a lot of dust...and seem to hang up a tad after using them. But I don't detect any drag issues after car is moving. But can see pad life in rear will be short. I can't really see how different pads will fix problem. I just may not be able to tell I have a problem with harder material pads. That is our only complaint with this car, and my dealership is aware of our concern. 02SilverStroke
Owners I have spoken with and dealers are telling me there getting about 24,000 miles on the these rear brake pads most also replacing rotors. My 05 Five Hundred SEL has 27,000 miles and the rear pads will be replaced tomorrow. The guys at Just Brakes said that it was very unusual for the rear brakes to wear out before the front brakes. They said that one reason they're wearing out so quickly is that they are a European design. That sounds reasonable, but they would be just b/s'n me. fastracing
My husband just finished checking my 05 Freestyle and it needs rear brakes as well at 19k. Also about the comment about Eupropean cars having back brake issues is exactly correct. My husband works for a Volkswagen dealership in the parts department and he says that they replace a lot more rear brakes than they do front brakes. It sounds like this is being a very common problem and I would ask everyone to post a comment on the forum TO: Ford Management under Ford Five Hundred Brakes. There has only been one person post on this and I am getting to post to it as well.

You also probably need to get in touch with a District Service Representative and let them know about this.

You also probably need to get in touch with a District Service Representative and let them know about this. I contacted Jerry Reynolds, who is formerly a managing partner at Prestige Ford in Garland, and a former two term chairman of the National Ford Dealer Council. His suggestion is to call the Customer Assistance line at 1-800 392-3673 and get your comments on record. Then a local representative will contact you so that you can bring your car to a local dealer. spacescape
Are brake pads covered under warranty?
Ralph Greene
It's almost like a proportionong valve is causing rear brakes to come on sooner and stay on later before releasing. That's what it feels like on my car. I think rapid pad wear is a result of the problem, not the cause of the problem.
02SilverStroke
Are brake pads covered under warranty? No, that's in the exclusions. I read my warranty before taking the Five Hundred to a garage. That's why I went to a brake shop rather than the dealer.
Jamers
My 2005 500 rear brake pads never threw off much dust until Ford replaced them back in Jan 2006 due to a warranty issue. It all started when the car was not driven for about 1 week during XMAS '05. Suddenly I had vibration when braking. The Ford service dept said it was a known issue with the rear pads corroding and replaced them under warranty. The vibration was certainly gone but ever since then the pads throw off 2-3 times the amounts of dust as do my front pads. This reminds me of my 2002 Expedition that used to do the same but with the fronts being the problem. Our new 2006 Explorer barely throws off any dust. I seem to recall reading in some 500 brochure way back that this car was equipped with low-dust emitting pads. So much for that.
