I have to disagree with that, The decisions made in the 1990s by Ford is why they are in the situation they are in now.
Can you seriously think that going nearly 10 years without developing a new car platform in NA as smart?
Just look how bad off Ford was at the turn of the century when it came to cars and they had to jump through their asses to get subpar products (which thankfully got better and better as they where released) out to market. Just look at what happened after the Focus...the 500 was barely an ok car, the Fusion was a good improvement over the 500, The Mustang was more or less a homerun for Ford, The Edge was at least a triple, The renamed 500 aka Taraus addressed the issues that the 500 had the best it could, The Flex looks like a great product with really shitty timing, the new Focus seems to be doing solid, even with its funky styling and the new CD3 Triplets will hopefully get the same refinement as the Flex, and the new Taraus looks like a real contenter when it launches. Then we'll have a New Mustang that will hopefully have the same interior materals as the Flex with further performance and ride improvements and we'll have a Fiesta and new Focus in the next two years also. It seems like Ford is finally catching up to where they need to be to compete.
