Long time reader, first time poster. I just wanted to share my experience with the dealers while looking for a crossover for my buddy. He started by limiting his choices to the Mazda CX9, Ford Edge, Pontiac Torrent, Nissan Morrano, and Toyota Highlander. His budget was 28k.
First we looked at the CX9. The dealership had just gotten their first shipment of them and it was prominently displayed on the new and modern showroom. We went for a test drive and they pulled up a Grand Touring model for us to try out. He liked it a lot but it was a little pricey so I told him to check out the Edge next.
We went to a Ford dealership down the road. My first impression was that it felt like being transported back in time to 1970 because the building was so dated and smelled like my grandma's basement. No big deal though, we just wanted to see the Edge. They had one in the showroom, but unfortunately it was an SE. My friends initial impression was that it wasn't even in the same league as the CX9 because was so stripped. I told him that its the same platform and drivetrain as the CX9 so he should wait and look at another model.
This is where it gets unbelievable. We asked if we could Drive an SEL or SEL+ because those were the packages we were interested in. They told us that we could LOOK at an SEL, but we couldn't drive an SEL because "it would be a shame to put miles such a nice new vehicle." My jaw dropped but my buddy didn't really care because he the salesperson said it "drives exactly the same as the SE." Granted this is mostly true. But he specifically mentioned wanting leather and the Vista roof. Needless to say, he was not impressed with the SE (though he did note that it felt "faster" than the CX9). My friend is not an auto enthusiast so the little things were a huge factor in his decision.
Long story short, he eventually ended up getting an Edge SEL, from another dealer, and only because he was persuaded into going back to look at the SEL with comparable options as the other vehicles he looked at. The other dealer was excellent. They located an SEL with leather and the roof and even letting him take it home overnight.
My point is that the first Ford dealer nearly ruined the possibility of my friend purchasing a Ford. I know having a poor dealer network has been a theme on this board for a while now so I just wanted to echo that with my experience.
FYI - He eliminated the other vehicles because...
The CX9 was close but a little pricey and he didn't need a third row
The Morrano didn't look as cool as the Edge
The Highlander was boring and expensive
The Torrent was a POS
The Edge was nearly eliminated because the second row didn't slide forward, but fortunately the seating package he got included the power seat fold down so that made up for it.
Take it for what it's worth.
