Sorry to let you know this, it does not agree with your personal opinions. I filled up today. The net result is that I lost 3 mpg. That is a substantial savings at $1.00 full dollar per gallon. And the Governor of Colorado & Nebraska, have instituted a ten year plan with subsudies from Congress and the private sector (primarily General Motors in these two States) to continue to support this 85% Corn (and other grain like the left over hops that was disposed of by Coor's brewing company in Golden, CO that it has been found can be converted into the E-85 process).
There are several new E-85 refineries in the Eastern part (farming part of this State and in the State of Nebraska) that are providing the once scare E-85 at a huge savings compared to gasoline. Now, I realize that this fuel is highly subsidized. But think of it this way. 85% crop fuel, 15% gasoline would make us fuel independent if we all used it. Or even if it was the same price as gasoline, we would be paying the cost to the United States and not foreign interests.
This is not the answer to lower fuel costs, the real answer is to develop our own resources in North America, like Anwar, off shore gas resources, the oil pits in Canada, the huge oil find in Utah that no one can touch and the clean shale of the Western States that can be made into oil (IF ONLY THE GOVERNMENT WOULD ALLOW US TO TAP THESE RESOUCES!). And we need to continue to pursue other energy resouces to propell our toys.
I feel very fortunate right now to have a vehicle that can use E-85 because of the cost and availability to the area in which I live (which is Littleton, Colorado). The 3 mph lower mileage that I get is fully worth the $1.00 saving per each gallon of gasoline. Check the national prices and look at Colorado. The City of Longmont has several stations and you will not believe their prices, just over $2.00 per gallon, but to far for me to travel. Some stations in Denver are making a killing by selling this fuel at or near the gas prices, but the smart buyer knows which stations are low. The station I deal with has had only a 5 cent variance in the last year, from $2.25 to $2.29.
Just my 2 cents worth. And because I use the fuel my opinions are from fact and not from any other souce.
