Without knowing if the "date" you are reading is indeed a "date" (ie, is it stamped, moulded, or written in marker/grease pencil?) but if it is my guess is this: In the US standard date format is MM/DD/YY. In Canada and Mexico and every other metric-based industry, standard date format is DD/MM/YY.
