Matching 6 digit production seq number to approx timeframe?

Recommended Posts

Hello. I am wondering if it's possible if there's some table or list that I could see that would approximately match up the 6 digit production sequence number out of VINs to when that occurred. Specifically, I am looking/tracking six 2008 Edge's at various dealers and am curious if I can tell approximately how long they have been on their lots based on their build dates, plus some ? ship time allotment (what to use for ship timeframe?) Possible? FYI, the six 6 digit seq numbers are:

A66812, A78089, A28418, A11498, B10011, B10696

Am I correct in thinking that for instance for A66812, that that was the 66812th Ford truck built in 2008 year? If so, can I match that to a month/year when built? TIA.

Chad

Sorry, no there isn't.

There are 3 ways to find out how long they've been sitting on the lot.

  1. Ask the dealer.
  2. Look at the door sticker and add the shipping time (as Critic suggested).
  3. Run the VINs through the tracking system.

Quite frankly though, the purpose of this section isn't to serve as a window shopping aid, so please don't ask me to start running a multitude of VINS. Do your own legwork; if you are interested in a specific vehicle I can look up the info but I can't set a precedence for running multiple VINs for people.

No, that is incorrect. The last 6 will show you in what order they were SERIALIZED (ie assigned a VIN), but not necessarily the order they were built -- obviously, A11111 would have likely been built before C99999, but A11256 could have been built before A11111. Build order is determined by a number of factors, including having the stock on hand to build the car. A particular option can put a hold on a vehicle for a long time and it throws the order out. A lot of this is explained in the "before you post" link in my signature.

Viperpilot, thanks for all of the info. I didn't see any specific info pertaining to such a vin lookup in your sticky, and wasn't really asking/expecting a specific vin lookup, just hopefully some sort of table, hence the post. Thanks for explaining too that the prod seq number isn't 100% due to build delays and such after the vin is allocated. I also realize the build date is on the door jam, however I obviously can't drive all over PA looking at door jams. I'm sure I could call the dealers and ask, but I really like to have the info beforehand, then when I ask, it is more of a leading question that I already know the answer. BTW, what would be a reasonable ship time amount to add to the build date in the door jam?

Thanks,

Chad

Hi Chad. :D Figure on an average of two weeks. It will certainly put you in the ballpark.

To give you an example: My 2007 Lincoln MKZ was built on 11/7/06 in Hermosillo, Mexico. It arrived at my Dealership in New Jersey on 11/20/06. So 13 days, door to door.

Keep in mind though, the build date on the door jamb only gives a month and year, no specific day. So you really cannot calculate an exact arrival date at the Dealer, since there is a 28-31 day spread from the first day of the month to the last day. So essentially, you can only get the Dealer arrival date down to a one month period (the middle of the build month to the middle of the following month). Just trying to give a heads up on that.

Good luck. :beerchug:
