Land Rover will be adding a 7 seat SUV to their lineup in 2012. It'll be based on the Freelander/LR2, but with a longer wheelbase and different styling to make it unique. It'll have the same engines as the Freelander/LR2. It's also reported that the new model will be aimed more toward on-road comfort rather than off-roading ability. The name Ventura is reportedly being considered.

Wasn't something like this under development when Ford owned them? I seem to remember reading something about a vehicle like this.

A great move by Land Rover. They can beg, borow and steal components from the Freelander and develop a more road biased 4x4 to ensure they capture market share for people who want a more frugal 7 seater than the Disco/ LR3. With the LRX, Freelander and "Ventura" all going down the same line at Halewood, they should also gain some economies of scale.

It'll be interesting to see how they develop the next Defender. If they can somehow develop a more road biased pick up or "truck" from the Defender then they could go after some more US sales too I suspect....

Yeah, since US truck sales are just climbing through the roof....

Ford should buy them back! Its going to turn around fast now.

Land Rover appears to be targetting just under 400,000 cars a year if you add on sales of cars made in Solihull to the ones they plan to make at Halewood:

I think that's impressive and if they can get Jag fired up then TATA may have the business deal of the decade on their hands!

The word "target" in this market doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot. Even Toyota is saying they probably won't meet their "targets" this year.
