The republican party says that they are the party of small govt. Yet, under the last administration the govt grew in size substantially. They say they are the party of less spending, yet, they took a budget surplus and turned it into the biggest deficit the country had seen to date. And left the economy in the worst recession since the Great Depression. I have read some economics papers that stated the recession was partly caused by republican DEregulation.

Just what govt departments would you like to eliminate when you reduce the size of govt by 90%???People donate money to the govt????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I would eliminate social security, the supreme court, government health care, foreign aid, the FBI/RCMP, state/provincial police, welfare, public housing, the Federal Reserve/Bank of Canada, membership in the UN, the Canadian Senate, the Space Program (it should be privatized), all government funded arts, and scientific and medical research, government pensions. This is just a start. If the financial meltdown that is predicted actually happens, these programs and more will be toast, anyway. We have been paying taxes all of our lives just to support socialist boondoggles so that egotistical buffoons can get elected. Now that it is time for us to collect something, there is nothing there. Get rid of government and let me keep my own money and take care of myself.

You say that because it is not that way in your country, remember the saying be careful what you wish for cause you just might get it. Imagine a world a world where the fire dept. stops your house from burning down, and you lose your house anyway when you get hosed on a self-pay bill for the use of their services.

Imagine a world where the cops come and save you when someone attempts to mug you. They keep you from getting mugged, however you still have your money taken from you when you get the self-pay bill for their services.

Imagine a world where the children of the country become less educated, because the funding for education is self-pay, and parents who cannot afford it get thrown into jail for not sending their kids to school.

Imagine a world where you lose the ability to work at a young age due to a stroke you had. (my good friend had a stroke at the beginning of his career at the age of 23) now you are physically unable to work, have no medicaid to pay you needed health care, and have no access to social security to pay your bills to survive.

I suspect you have formulated your opinions based on some discontent with your system, (everyone dislikes something about everything) And the fact that you have been blessed with good health, and a good paying job. One serious illness, and or injury and you will change your mind!!!!

Did you read the article? Mother Jones leans to the right and like most republicans blames the democrats for everything. The funny thing about this article it names more repubs than dems and blames everything on the dems!!!

Believe me I am NOT confused.

Please go to the websites "about us" at the top of the page...I'm sure if you do you will see that this is a very 'PROGRESSIVE ORGANIZATION" Michal Moore used to be an editor of this publication.... I could care less about party affiliation....I care about fiscal responsibility....I want health care for everyone....I don't want substandard health care for poor people....I want us all to have the same healthcare....I get very tired of people and their preconceived ideas of who is responsible for the ills of our society....please check out the motherjones site....I looked up airline deregulation and trucking deregulation and both were democratic efforts....I had always heard the opposite....knowledge is power

Or you can believe the health insurance industry......they wouldn't lie to you would they?

Your info is 10 years old....but I know when the richest people in the world travel to the Cleveland Clinic, they don't do it because the like Ohio....They do it because it is "SECOND TO NONE" in the health care industry.... You want to say our entire system is 37th...I don't know what that means, what that entails, I know I can get world class care within 1 hour of my home....and I think most people on this board can find excellent care close to their homes also....everyone on this board has good insurance, good facilities, good doctors....so from a personal standpoint....why are you putting down the USA healthcare? Or are you just repeating what you heard somewhere?

longball, I think he is more pointing out the difference between countries that spend less on health care and have better services then the U.S. It is not an easy fix no matter what the circumstances are, however in countries where Ford does not fund their employees medical costs they pay more to their employees. Last I new CAW members were getting comped $33.00 an hour working at Ford.

My point is....If for free you could get your services anywhere in the world.... Where would you go?.... I could drive there in less then 1 hour.

You don't get it free.

Even if you have health insurance you have huge co-pays, endless hassle with the insurance company and are denied care by some faceless bureaucrat in an insurance office somewhere. Every doctor who looks in your room bills your company (sometimes more than once) and an army of bureaucrats deal with all of this billing and make endless phone calls to get permission to perform ANY procedure. Patients are delayed in getting care which adds to the costs and reduces the care.

Some patients who can't pay or don't have insurance are dumped on the street.

Thats why health care outcomes are so poor in the US

If money was no object then it would seem that France is the place to have your illness or injury cared for.

I actually know a man that went to Thailand to have dental work done....He works for one of the airlines and flew for free....he had extensive work done at a dental school there for less then $500.... He has NO dental insurance...He did this strictly for economic reasons....this had NOTHING to do with QUALITY....Is this where we are headed? It sounds to me like this is another race to the bottom....I don't believe I am a racist....but I want an American doctor .... Trained in an American university....I hope you get the care you want out of the country

BON VOYAGE....

You have insurance....you don't need to travel to get care....Again this list is 10 years old...I think this list is about availability...not quality

Longball I respect you as I think you are fair in your assessments, and feel you have no bias. Besides the ranking which could also be skewed, what of the other aspects of a national care plan are you uncertain of?

As I've said before...I am suspicious of taking money from the seniors and spending it on the uninsured...and especially like you I want the system to cover everyone with the same policy our federal employees have...I suggested before, we add a flat tax to pay for it...I really think we could and should do this...what do you think of the plan that they are talking about right now?

There is some down sides, it really draws my ire that it leaves the insurance companies intact because I blame them for the current rate of health care cost inflation. I also don't like the fact that it will force people to purchase insurance if they don't opt -in to the government plan. I have seen people thrown in jail, and had their license taken if they could not afford auto insurance in Ohio after it became required by law. However I think the government option is probably the best we will be able to get passed at this point. If we pushed to the plan you proposed everyone working in the insurance industry would be looking for a job on day 1 it goes into effect. However if they are forced to compete then it would be gradual, and those working in the industry would get the opportunity to apply for jobs administrating the government health option. Also if the government plan is better people will opt in, but if the private plans are better people will keep what they have. I now from experience that the current government medical coverage is better though, I know because I know what they get, and I also know what the UAW/Ford have negotiated.

You guys medical plans and cost is not even what it was in 06' They claim that the savings from cutting fraud will pay for the new government option, however if the savings don't materialize then there is a cut off date. The principles are sound, so what do we lose by giving it a try, we can always build on it to make it better, but if we do nothing in coming years no one will be able to afford health care insurance. How much more will Ford ask you to pay in the next contract if the cost continue to rise at the current rate?

We would need almost all of the insurance industry workers to administer this gigantic proposal...we could do this if we had the guts...I asked my doctor about our co-pays....he said they actually go to the insurance company....as in the co-pay is subtracted from the payment the doctor gets from the insurance company. I am getting to the point that I don't think our politicians can get a good plan because of the hard nosed politics...with no regard for the people that need help.

The congressmen and senators that except money from the insurance lobby will certainly try to block any real reform language to keep their gravy train going. When Obama introduced his reform plan some officials were calling for a total rewrite, that tells me that the plan would accomplish it's cost savings goals. If not why would they be trying to block it? Some want a watered down version to give the appearance that there is going to be reform, without actually lowering the costs to us. If they support real reform then it will cost them campaign contributions.

It is up to us the people to force reform, we have to demand it!
