The poor pitiful UAW workers at Norfolk is getting old

It is sad, but unfortunately many business have closed down or moved from the Hampton Roads area and it has been very difficult for the workers and their family members. Most were not given any notice, unlike NAP workers. But no worker from any other business in this area has cried as much as the Norfolk Assembly Plant workers and your union leadership are the biggest cry babies of all. You all should have seen this coming.

But you have been too busy telling each other "we are the greatest" instead of listening to what the consumers have been saying. The union leadership never tells the members the truth and the members are too stupid to know the truth from a lie.

Why do UAW members at Norfolok think they deserve a hand out from Ford?

Doesn't Ford pay you well for the hours you work? Aren't you each paid $25.00 an hour or more?

The "poor pitiful UAW" at Norfolk is getting old. It's tough but start looking for a job.

um hey dummy-"instead of listening to what the consumers have been saying."--the f-150 is the best selling vehicle in the world. what exactly should the NAP workers be listening for? their quality had been rated by ford management as among the best. so tell us how they could have seen this coming?

Not that I agree with what Ray said, but you do realize you are the ones who bought into the UAW idea of "just keep asking for more" and now you're getting fucked. This is not all Fords fault you know that right?

How much do you think that janitor that was making $25 an hour at NAP will be making in '08?

A union that scores big for its members in good times must also be able to react and protect its members' livelihoods when times are bad. This isn't an issue that's peculiar to the Norfolk plant - exploding health care costs have been an issue for a decade now. Ford is in business to make money, and in today's world can obtain its labor needs outside this country - especially if consumers are indifferent (see second paragraph below). The UAW must make concessions, real ones, that can give Ford the one thing it needs to keep jobs in this country - cost certainty. When Ford can't predict its labor costs because of runaway medical inflation and utilization, then it, like any other business, will take the steps it must to stay afloat. It is a damn shame when plants close because the company cannot achieve cost certainty any other way. The UAW can prevent that - but it must make painful concessions to do so. But that's a union's job in tough times.

The UAW should also take a page from the Ladies Garment Workers union back in the day - apply some of those union dues to a public relations campaign encouraging consumers that patriotism means supporting American workers, and supporting American workers in the context of the auto industry means buying from the domestics that employ union labor.

I think because union membership is so low in this country now that most Americans don't identify with unions anymore. You are right with the PR campaign, unions have a bad image in this country right now and I'm sure it is because of an aggressive PR campaign by the corporations.

My bet... $25.

They all have enough seniority to stay with the company. Remember, it takes 25+ years with the company to push a broom.

If they decide not to stay with the company, they will see their retirement checks sitting in their mail box. Better yet, some are drawing Social Security and pay, they will just see a different check along with their other check.

PS-Before non-assembly workers get their dissy in a bunch, after working the assembly line for 20+ years and other jobs directly supporting that line, they deserve to push a broom.

But is a janitor going to be able to transfer? Will they have to go back to the line if they do so?

OK, worse case, they go back to the line. However they cannot find a job they are able to do, so they have them pick up cardboard and push a broom. What do you know, now they are getting paid more then a janitor (at least at NAP, Janitor is a non-pro job).

Have seen this method used with SOME of the transfers to NAP from Edison. They take all that nice money to transfer, perform just below mediocre on every job until they are given a BS job. Bide their time until they feel like retiring, after all with that much time in the company they are not going to get fired.

I agree with Ray on a few things. All of us at NAP should have seen it coming. But we was to busy listening

to what the Union wasn't telling us. They don't come to work to know what is going on. The 20% of the

line workers doesn't want to come to work. So we have to carry hundreds of extra people to cover. From

what I have seen the trades people doesn't want to work unless it is on the weekend. Being #1 in quality

isn't anything if the profit is not there. Is there anything we can do to help NAP, I don't really know. But

waiting for the UAW TO HELP IS NOT GOING TO GET IT.

have to agree with you bubba for the most part......most of the people on here crying "cut the check"....are the ones that don't come in....always looking for someone to give them something for nothing....someone always owes them something...I can see how the general public could have this view of us...sad but true.

If their product is moving to a place that currently builds the same thing, they will not go with those same jobs nor as much seniority for purposes of bidding on new jobs at their new plant. In most cases, these people will go back to the line, but remember, the UAW has a way of negotiating everything differently, regardless of contract, so I would guess that anything is possible, just depends on what they classify the transfer as.

Some of us supported you in the best way we could. Some things can't be changed. Just like our plant closing. If I remember correctly you folks cried for quite a while after getting cut loose.
