NHTSA has the sheet up for 2008 Excape - and even though it was not tested, it has the information on the safety ackaging:

Side Airbags

Sise Curtains

Electronic Stability Ccontrol

Traction Control

ABS

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (this is now required by law)

all standard

also standard will be anti-pinch power windows and down/lift power windows buttons.

now the weird thing is - Mariner and Tribute already even have crash tests done:

Four Star Frontal

Five Star Side

Three star rollover.

Tribute: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/NCAP/Cars/4073.html

How can that be? If the 2008 has all that stuff standard, how come the links you provided state that the test vehicle did not have side air bags, or stability control?

I did not notice that piece - maybe this is still 07 test, but the bottom table is already 08? :shrug"

I am as confused as you are

The 2008 Tribute and Escape are largely the same vheicles with a few cosmetic upgrades so they are just lifting the data from their previous tests. That includes test with or without airbags. Once they become standard, then they can't use the test data without side-airbags.

Do the current (2007) models have any of these, either standard or as an option?

The Mercury press release says that 2008 non-Hybrids will have AdvanceTrak. Is this for sure? I'm seriously considering the 2008 Mariner Hybrid and would like stability and traction control, along with AWD.

The press release is from about 3 weeks ago. They are supposed to be in showrooms by February. I would assume that the press release is accurate.

fyi....The NHTSA crash test standards change for 2008 models.

2008's will have to meet a higher standard for side impact.

I carefully examined the alleged 2008 results vs. 2007 results. Other than roll-over results, present in the one and not the other, there is no difference. But there is one curiosity: the tire size for 2008! This is given as P225/75R16, whereas for 2005-2007 it was P235/70R16. But I would prefer the Toyo Proxes S/T 245/70R16 speed rated V!

Then, again, according to HybridCar.com (http://www.hybridcar.com/news/in-the-spotlight/mercury-hybrid-2008-mariner-hybrid-2.html) the tire specs are the same as before...

From what we know today, it seems that Ford hasn't quite worked out the problems between AdvanceTrak and the hybrid system. Possibly due to the regenerative braking. Until that happens, I think AdvanceTrak will only be on the non-hybrids.

That would be a shame. Toyota's Highlander Hybrid has traction/skid control--I just don't like the way the Highlander handles. And: Ford has a relevant patent in this area--http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/5358317.html.
