Radar would still be useful in tracking older aircraft that will still be sharing the sky unless you're going to force ever Joe, Bob, and Larry who owns a small or experimental aircraft to go install a GPS beacon. Although radar will not be completely abandoned, the new system is called automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast or ADS-B and is a cooperative surveillance technology for tracking aircraft. The aircraft determines its own position via GNSS (GPS) and periodically broadcasts this via a radio frequency.
