markfnc
Anyone pull a pop up camper with a Crown Victoria? There is a good deal on a 2006 with leather and the sport pkg I found, and was wondering if it could pull a pop up. I am sure the engine is up to it, but not sure of the frame and transmission. Pop up is alittle less than 3000 lbs.
92merc
I've pulled my Coleman pop up with my 92 Grand Marquis. It was a 100 degree day too. But I only took it 50 miles. If I were to do it more often, I'd get a transmission cooler. The other thing was the back end bounced a lot. Not comfortable riding in the back seat. But maybe the newer suspension with Watts linkage is better. Worst case, you'd probably get some air bag assist shocks out back. Outside of that, just a good quality frame hitch should do it. ute
sport pack should have tranny cooler you could also get the oil cooler from a cvpi look in any bone yard for one as for towing you will have no problems

The old towing package consisted of: heavier rear springs (if you have air bags you will have to limit the tounge weight to Fords specs or modify them, most hitch shops can do this) a tranny cooler, PS cooler, and a larger core rad. The addtion of the oil cooler would be good but not nessesary unless your pulling up mountains in 90F temps. Then it would be advised to have. The frame the engine the tranny and rear end are more than capable of these tow weights. You can still get class III hitches (3 ton capacity) for the CV GM any hitch for 1992 and up will fit your car. Hidden hitch's Class III (3 ton) can be upgraded to Class IV with weight distribution to increase capacity to 10,000 lbs Way more than your gonna pull with a CV. Matthew I read on a camper forum that recently (6 +/- years) the Crown Vic had a frame change or redeign that now limits the pulling capacity. Does anyone now if this is right? Apparently in the early 9-'s you could get a towing pkg (5000 lbs).
matthewq4b
I read on a camper forum that recently (6 +/- years) the Crown Vic had a frame change or redeign that now limits the pulling capacity. Does anyone now if this is right? Apparently in the early 9-'s you could get a towing pkg (5000 lbs). The Frame Change was on the front End not the back and does affect the strength for towing. In the fact the new frame is way stronger than older one. As is the tranny engine and every thing else Hitches can be bought for the new CV GM TC frame with weights up to 5 ton With equalizing. Same as the old cars. Hidden Hitch makes the 5 ton jobbie That will fit your 2006, PT #412192 (the one i have on my 92 GM) the crossmember of the hitch is visible from the back. PT#412182 is totally hidden but is only good up to 6000LB's with equalizing. The same hitch was used on the cars from 1992 up to current. Ford just choose to drop the Towing package for unknown reasons. (liability maybe) They also dropped the springs in most units and went to air bags in all but the Fleet units( not sure if the performance package units still have springs or not). And I do not know of any cop cars or Taxi's that tow 2 ton trailers. The Air bags limit the tounge weight thus limiting the total avalible tow weight. But Like I said most reputable trailer hitch shops can modify the bags valves to increase the tounge weight to handle the higher loads. A CVPI could be done with no mods other than heavier rear springs. A ton and half pop up camper will be nothing for the CV to pull. Way less stress on the car than pulling a full size holiday trailer . Here is an artical on towing with the CV that should help you out. matthewq4b
Ford dropped the towing package in an effort to force buyers into more profitable SUV's Not sure that would fly Hemi the CV GM was one of their most if not the most profitable vehical Ford had in the late 90's early 00's. I think it was a cost cutting liabilty thing. As a coinicedance It happend right around the whole Firestone thing. So makes me thing it was a liabilty issue thing. Gabriel Edwards
I have the hitch on my 06 and pulled a 4000#+ trailer loaded with all our stuff from Largo Florida to Sheridan Indiana. They make a full electric trailer brake system for the GM, so adding it and the airbags to inside of coil springs next. After that it's camper time, 4000#'s loaded. Retirement/ disability starts being fun then. No problems with anything, drove up and down The Smokey Mountains. Just remember overdrive off!
