Did ya Miss me?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I'm in the process of finishing up a week long trip to the UK (at the hotel this Sunday evening spent £4 to get 20 min on the net) and got a couple shots of various Ford UK products over here, with the most interesting being a Focus C-Max parked next to a UK Spec Pre 02 Explorer! I'll add the photos hopefully by Wendsay, since I'll be getting in at 6 EST Tommorow night, then getting caught up on "quatily" time with the GF who I haven't seen in the past week ;). I have a couple interesting Obersvations on European cars and how they would playout in the US and whatnot. The only "exoctic" UK Ford I've seen is a Fesita ST and a SN95 Gen Mustang LOL.

Well till then....

I spend alot of time in England and my Dad drives a Focus C-Max, he loves it, very spacious, very reliable and very economical. He has a 1.8 Turbo Diesel, gets 40+ miles per gallon! I love driving it! Hers are some pics...got some pics of the Fiesta ST and Focus ST aswell, very popular cars in England, The Focus sells on excess of 130,000 units a year in the UK alone, making it the best selling car by far!!

I'm at work right now...I have to work on getting the photos up later today of the stuff I want to show you...

Some impressions...

Spent most of the week cabbing to the destations I needed to get to and 95% of the cab products where Fords. Made sure to keep an eye on interiors, and well from what I've seen in the States vs UK, there isn't that big of a difference IMO in plastics. For example the newish Mondeo cab I got I ride in, has the same exact black plastic on its doors that my Mustang has! The Focus wagon I went in didnt have any huge improvements over what my 02 SVT Focus had.

Most popular US based product based on my sightings:

PT Crusier then the Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee! I saw nearly dozen PT Crusiers the whole week and about 6-8 Cherokees and Grand Cherokees while I was out and about...I was also slightly suprised to find as many SUV's, well mostly smaller SUV's like the RAV4 over there as I did. The Cherokees where Deisels, so that helps explain why they where popluar I guess.

UK cars vs US cars, in General. Well Since I was pretty dependant on mass transit to get places, I got a good feel for why Uk/Euro does things vs the US. I live in New Jersey, which has the highest population density in the work per sq mile, so I can roughly compare it to Europe, which has similar popluation desity. My first impression is that, at least in the UK, everything is at least 3/4 or even 1/2 the size it is in the States. Not to mention also that everything is more or less built up in large population centers, where owning a car isn't a nessitly like in the states, where the vast majortiy of people live in spread out subburbs with little to no mass trasit. It basically boils down to that car is a luxury item in Europe, where as in the States, it is a nessitly that gets water down, much like buying a washer or dryer...its bought because its needed, not because someone wants to make a statement or what not with it.

Funny Story, well to me...I met up with a couple UKer's that I met previously in the States...one was one telling me about this new car he got..I think it was an Astra or something and was going on and on about how great the car was and it put out a whopping 205HP with a turbo 4. So I kidded around with my friend and told him...was I supposed to be impressed? I have a 06 Mustang GT, so I really wasn't. So this other guy I know who was orginally from the Netherlands, lived in the States for a period of time and now lives in the UK starts to defend him and I turn around totally shut him down by saying this: Ok he has a Turbo 4, so to make things fair here, I want to add a supercharger to a Mustang, and what do I get? 500HP with a GT500 ;) that pretty much shut him up. :P

The Brits can be a bit weedy when it comes to sport cars! Well, the fastest car I have got(garaged up at the moment) is a Mazda Xedos 6 2.0 V6! Nothing compared to your Mustang but in Britain(I spend alot of time there aswell as America!) hot hatches are very popular, especially GM Astras, Ford Focus ST, VW Golf GTI etc. But in Britain small cars are still king, Fiestas, Corsas,Clios, Polos etc! Their is a nice little market for BIG American cars, only people who want something truely "different" buys Mustangs, Jeeps, Town Cars, from specialist dealerships, the Lincoln Town Car is very popular in the UK as it is used by alot of Limo companies that has taken off recently.

I love the sound of your Mustang, thats my dream car, hopefully once I leave uni in a well paid Job I will buy one(thats unless I get my parents to get me one first, which I know they would not!) The roads in the UK are so small, the Mustang would take the whole road up and scare all those Fiestas and Corsas to death, American Roads are massive and can accomodate big beasts, I love driving my old but fantastic 1995 Ford Crown Victoria V8 down the high way cruising and driving in comfort! But its kind of not well at the moment, so i mite have to confind it to the graveyard! But I certainly get anotherone tho!
