2007 Ford Edge AWD Review

(Detroit, Michigan) CarsAndTrucksForWomen.com - In 2003, Ford came out with their “If you haven't looked at Ford lately, look again” advertising slogan. The only problem with Ford’s slogan was that there were not too many products that wanted to make you look again. But the Ford Fusion, along with the more recently introduced Ford Edge have made a lot of people “look at Ford again.” And for good reason: The quality of the Ford Fusion is rated higher than comparable makes from both Honda and Toyota. The Edge has only been on the market for a few months, but like the Fusion, it has been a trouble free product. Consumer Reports did not rate the Edge in its 2007 magazine because it's too new to the market.

Our 2007 Ford Edge test vehicle arrived from Ford Motor Company equipped with the SEL Plus package, which included the optional AWD (All-Wheel-Drive). The sticker price, including the AWD package, but before options was $30,720.00. It totaled out at $36,580.00, including destination and delivery. See the breakdown at the end of the article.

I had originally expected for Ford to deliver our 2007 Edge test vehicle in Blazing Copper, however, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Ford provided us their test vehicle in a color called Crème Brulee. Crème Brulee can best be described as a beautiful smooth, soft and silky color that really highlights the bold, yet gracious curves in an overall contemporary and elegant fashion. The overall flow of the Crème Brulee paint is only broken apart by the large, three-bar chromed front grille. The grille's design is characteristic of Ford's new design theme. The center of the grille features a bold and prominent over-sized Ford logo, but it looks right at home.

OK, forget that the article is from carsandtrucksforwomen, it's a fantastic review and echoes everything I, a male, have said about my new Edge. The more positive things like this that get out into the media the more the public will realize what a great vehicle this is. I heartily second everything this reviewer wrote.

I'd bookmarked that site a couple of months ago because of the in-depth quality of their reviews. Not many reviews so far, but each one is fair and comprehensive. Most automag reviews are ego-trips for the authors; but this site seems to do things right.

Another excellent source for objective, fair and comprehensive vehicle reviews is http://www.nctd.com

It does look pretty good when the reviewer does not mention the horrable braking....

Maybe they didnt have a problem with them, like most people who own one......

I know we have had this discussion before regarding your need to haul a boat and the Atlanta traffic - which is fair comment, and even that most people dont drive around doing emergency stops every other minute like the rag testers and Atlanta drivers seem to do every day. I have read this review and many others, whilst i havent driven quite as many cars as the "pro's", however, i am not far behind, certainly closing on 100 different models now, including practically every comparable model in this class. I havent noted a difference in the feeling of the brakes, however i havent gotten the tape measure out either - but if the braking is as bad as a couple of rags make out, you would be able to notice it was taking time/distance to stop. I have been nearly rear-ended by at least 3 cars in the past month of owning this car - were all of them poor drivers or was the braking sufficient to do what is needed???

This review was written after many others were already published and certainly other info was available on the internet - surely this reviewer can read and might have made note to check out the braking. I know i did when i test drove this car, also when i bought it. Its starting to sound like a baseless beating of a deadhorse now.

To be fair, as I have stated before, you do not notice the braking issue until you really stand on the brakes. In normal driving situations it behaves like any other car I have ever driven ( inf fact Better than some ). The strange part is that the braking ability is not linear. The more you push it worse the stopping distances get. Normally, a panic stop is a linear progression of the normal stopping distances. I did not find that to be the case with the Edge. There is a distinct point where is goes from no problem to oh Sh*@#.

I also want to point out that I like just about everything else about the Edge. I can certianly understand why so many people overlook the issue and buy one and enjoy it. I read the reviews and though "it could not be that bad". Then I drove one and the brakes seemed to work just fine. That was until my third test drive when I actually stood on them. I then understood was the reviewers were talking about. I would have bought one by now if the bakes had not given me such a bad feeling. I even though about buying one and fixing the problem with some brake/suspension upgrades.

I really think that if you replaced the pads, brake lines( go to Stainless Steel ), and front shocks ( higher rate ) it would stop well and not fade. Based on my past experiance upgrading the brakes on sports cars, I think the front shocks are the most significant factor in the stopping distances. Of course bigger rotors/calipers and better tires would certianly help...

In the end, I decided that I did not want to spend that much money on a brand new vehicle just so I could feel comfortable driving it. To be honest, it makes me a little mad because I really liked the rest of it...

I'll probably get a Mazda CX-9 which has "OK" brakes or the BMW X3 which has excellent brakes...

I suppose if one feels the need to tailgate at 80mph, there may be an issue with the braking.

I have a F150 crewcab 4x4... the pig weighs 5500#.

I've had my share of emergency stops... but guess what? I usually avoid them by not tailgating and watching what traffic is doing ahead of me... like most drivers out there.

So I'm not sure why some find this to be a tremendous issue.
