With sales of over 13,500, the Ford Focus ST is now firmly positioned as the most sought after performance hatchback in the UK, and reflects the motorsport success of the all-conquering Focus RS WRC, which saw Ford take the 2006 WRC manufacturer's title, and which currently heads the 2007 World Rally Championship.

Ford has announced the arrival of a new special edition of the high performance Focus ST. Called the Focus ST500, and priced from £20,495, it will be available to just 500 UK customers.

The Ford Focus ST500 is based on the top-of-the-range Focus ST3 with the addition of unique features. All models are finished in metallic black with classic silver bonnet, roof and side stripes which are designed to echo the livery of the winning GT40 in the 1-2-3 victory at Le Mans in 1966.

Power comes from the Focus ST's acclaimed 20-valve five-cylinder Duratec 2.5 engine, which develops 225PS at 6,100rpm and 320Nm of torque at just 1,600rpm. Since its introduction in 2005, the Focus ST has established itself as one of the finest "hot hatchbacks" ever made and received critical acclaim from the specialist media and enthusiast customers alike.

Included in the Focus ST500's unique specification are scarlet leather Recaro sports seats and matching upholstery, special ST500 badging, automatic Xenon high-intensity headlamps, auto-dimming rear view mirror, rain-sensing wipers and solar-reflect windscreen.

There have been a few limited edition ST's in the Euro market and Japan.

Ford Focus ST WRC Edition for Switzerland http://www.worldcarfans.com/8070322....or-switzerland

Last WRC season, Ford won the Manufacturers title for the first time in 27 years by accumulating 195 points overall but missing out on the Drivers title by 1 point (Loeb 112, Gronholm 111) and the Swiss are going to celebrate! And celebrating they do with a Focus ST WRC Edition, limited to 100 lucky Swiss who are willing to part with 44,900 Francs.

The road-legal rally replica rides on 19-inch BBS rims wrapped in Pirelli tyres (PZero Nero 235/35 R19 TL ZR 91Y), has special side mirrors, frontspoiler and a hatch with carbon-inlays as well as WRC decals. The interior has besides a WRC badge, a carbon-look to it.

As the name suggests, the special edition is based on a Focus ST with 2.5 liter Duratec Turbo engine delivering 225 horses at 320 Nm torque. Floor the pedal and you'll be on 100km/h in roughly 6.8 seconds and it will keep going till you hit 241km/h. Braking is thought of too, front brakes have 320mm discs with four-piston calipers and in the rear you'll find 280mm discs with two-piston calipers

Ford has used the ST as a nice carrot in the worldwide market, just strange the largest market in the world was ignored because Ford said the customer would not pay for it. Ford's lose I guess.

Wow! I just did a currency conversion from 20,495 pounds to US dollars. It's hard to imagine a $42,225 Focus.

Wow I just did a currency conversion on a Mazdaspeed3 from 19,495 pounds to US dollars. Its hard to imagine a $39,746.37 Mazda3.

What's your point?

The GTI is a safer vehicle. The Focus needs to wait until the re-engineered next generation to be comprehensively comparable.

Euro NCAP tests show they are both rated pretty much equal (MY2004 models) , actually the Focus scored higher then the Golf except in pedestrian protection test.
