well my cousing just became the latest victim on the high gas prices because he sold his 2004 Lariat and will buy a new Focus, he rented one for 2 weeks and he liked the car

Don't see how your excuse used to explain why the doesn't apply there as well.

Because it's about market share. If the Corolla was the best selling compact last year and (assuming strong Civic sales continue), and the Civic is the best selling compact THIS year then, quite obviously, the Corolla has LOST market share.

 

The Focus does not need to outsell any of the cars ahead of it to increase its market share. 12% and 15% are both less than 20%, but 15% is bigger than 12%.

Now that I finally drove the 08 Focus, and being a previous Focus ZTS owner, here is my 2c:

-Great on gas

-Smooth/quiet ride

-Seems more cramped inside, feels narrower than old 04 focus. Knees on both sides are more constrained. ( I am 6'2")

-Too many buttons on center stack.

-Couldn't get as comfartable as in the old focus, figured out it was the telescoping wheel (or lack of)

-Steering wasn't as sharp or responsive as old focus. Overall car was smooth, but not as fun to drive compared to old one.

-Door handle was hard to grab, and in an awkward place.

 

Overall it's not bad.
