Vauxhall sans Opel could reallign with GM Daewoo, Holden

Recommended Posts

But Opel without Vauxhall isn't worth much. Vauxhall sells around 28% of the groups cars, has GM's 4th biggest market (in the UK) and Opel's biggest market. Vauxhall is arguably the crown jewels of GM Europe. Who would want Opel without the one thing it's got going for it?

Vauxhall is dependent on Opel products, the two are too deeply integrated to separated.

and changing rebadged Daewoos from Chevrolet to Vauxhall is as cynical as it gets.

Other way around really. What would Vauxhall be selling if not for rebadged Opels? You better hope they don't decide a few Daewoo rebadges will cover it.

Everyone knows that rebadged Daewoos don't sell well and hurt the brand whether

it be Chevrolet, Holden or Vauxhall. Holden are working on a fairly good version of

the Cruze but it's still second best for Europeans used to a good Astra.

My point is Opel has no value without Vauxhall, because Vauxhall only employs about 5000 people in the UK making cars and marketing rebadged Opels. The could quite easily switch to another GM product line, they have no need of Opel. Opel employs 25000 people directly in Germany and many many more in the supply chain. Vauxhall pays a cost for Opel's stupidity in employing so many Germans. That's why GM is toying with the idea of keeping the good bit (Vauxhall) and dumping the crap bit (Opels factories in Germany/ Opel brand).

Vauxhall is a top top seller in the UK. If Opel was as sucessfull a Vauxhall in German or France then they wouldn't even be in this mess.

I do hope they don't simply rebadge Daewoo's but I don't think anyone would want Opel without the good bit, Vauxhall.

Ooooo Vauxhall is a top seller in the UK.

Geez, John Bull. Did you get the message about the colonies in America revolting, yet? Queen Victoria is dead too.

If GM sells Opel about the only hope they've got of keeping even a toehold in Europe is by rebadging Daewoos as Vauxhalls.

Not that GM Europe has been anything more than a parasite over the last decade or longer.

Provocative slur? Getting close to the mark. Besides us Brits have to go a long way to beat the vulgar displays of jingoism in the US.

Yes and it was good old-fashioned American corporate mismanagement that allowed it to get to that stage. GM and Ford's largest market in Europe is the UK, and things in Europe for both companies would have been a damned sight worse if there wasn't "Treasure Island" to prop them up. GM's treatment of their european "home-market" has been shameful with their continual pandering to the Germans (Ford's treatment has been only slightly better). An Opel/Fiat merger including Vauxhall will probably mean that GM's Ellesmere Port and Luton plants are shut down sooner than a split Vauxhall eventually importing Daewoo's, but there is probably little in it. The future lineup of Daewoo and Opel will have all their platforms merged by the next generation models, so there is little loss there. Most Brits (including myself) couldn't give a damn if Opel and Vauxhall do split, and I doubt many Vauxhall drivers would even be aware.

John Bull is an insult? Since when?

TStag's insistance that Vauxhall is a viable part of a global GM based on its status as, what? the #2 brand? in the UK is a laughably overstated estimate of the value of the UK market in the grand scheme of things.

Because nothing in Britain has ever been mismanaged, eh? That whole India/Pakistan/Kashmir thing.... handled flawlessly by the Brits.....

English are one to talk, name a sucessful British car company? crickets, pin dropping.

Vauxhalls are simply WRONG SIDE OR THE ROAD drive Opels. lol!! The way things are going there, the UK will ban cars, except for the 'snotty classes'.
