It took years to get away from Navistar and not step on any of their Intellectual Property.

 

Of yeah, Ford does not own most of the software on either of the new diesels coming out either ! As a matter of fact, Ford has outsourced diesel controls software development since the 7.3L !

Because of platform rationalization, there's probably going to be even less work to do.

So you think EU or AU emission spec engines meet US and CARB specifications ? ROFLMAO !!!

 

The biggest shock the product planner got in the early days of the US Fiesta was the huge cost difference between a EU spec powertrain control system and one that meets US and CARB. And yes, it is outsourced to the same vendor.

Seems like it didn't take that long, given how long it takes for an Ford engine to come out...hell the 3.5L was supposed to be out in 2005 or so and lets not talk about the Boss 6.2L :P

 

I think the Scorpion is moving along quite well..plus when was the last time that Ford NA designed its own Diesel Engine? I can't even think of the last time Ford made its own Diesel for the US market.

IIRC, design work started in 2005 or 2006. Engines were on dynos by the end of 2006.

Some design ideas were borrowed from the Puma 4 cylinder EU diesel.

 

Most people think the EU Ford diesel V6 was the starting point for the new US v8 diesels.. Ford could not use anything (or anybody) from that program because Navistar did have a hand in its design and then there would be issues about Intellectual Property on the new engines.

Nothing to do with EU or even AU.

North American Rationalization of engines and power trains, less engines = less engineers.

Maybe that's the reason you and your buddies are no longer needed.....

Well the 1.6L in the Fiesta is new in the US and uses a new and unique injection system. Point being engines the number of engines does not equal the number of emission systems.

 

The US will also be getting 2 all new gasoline V8s that will see very limited duty anywhere else in the world (AU will get the 5.0; don't know about the Boss) as well as at least 1 new V8 diesel, unique to the world. The gasoline engines will use Ford US written PFI software.

 

I suspect AU will use the same software in the 5.0L unless they really want to pay a third party a lot of money to do the same thing.

 

BTW, one of the major cost savings for Ford worldwide was to in source, to the US, all calibration and emission testing. This has been phasing in for the past 6-12 months. I guess us Yanks can do somethings better than the rest of the world. Or at least more cost effectively.

Good to hear Ford has finally set US emissions at the beginning then Europe/ROW.

It's much easier with the one stop approach is used with emission development,

maybe the wheel doesn't have to be reinvented halfway through projects anymore?

 

FoA now has a full emissions test lab and transmission specialist courtesy of Ford

spending $1.6 billion on facilities. T6 contract brought a lot of good gear to Australia.

Modelling software was used to confirm only cat converter and recalibration was needed

to save the inline 6, not the massive cost FoA thought and that's why V6 imports were scrubbed

 

Not sure how V8 calibrations will be handled, we only have to go to Euro IV at the moment

but maybe Tier 2 is a good bet in case we need to import products to the USA......

So how do you think they will do -20F cold start and drive away testing in Oz ?

 

Might not get -20F in Dearborn, but Yellowknife is a lot closer to Dearborn than it is to Geelong !

They're getting their own cold test lab as well, probably in by now. T6 has also been spotted in the European Alps, I think both FoA and Holden used that area in the past for cold weather testing. The guys also go across to the South Island of New Zealand, there's glaciers and cold stuff everywhere. A lot of people don't know the early 1990s Falcon were driven back and forth between LA and Alaska constantly for over 6 months.
