7Mary3
Got a question, specifically about the 6R140 Torqshift, but applicable to the other Ford 6 speeds. The question is why don't they have a 1:1 ratio in them anymore? I figure it must have something to do with the use of the Lapelletier geartrain, because the GM 6L80 and 6L90 also use that design, and they don't have a 1:1 either. I always liked the idea of a 1:1 for towing, because I assumed it was stronger. I know that the Lapelletier is a less complex design than the old 4 speed automatics that used Simpson geartrains. Summer Cruiser
That's a really good question. Perhaps the durability in the new 6-speeds is better due to inherantly having to shift more, so when towing it uses the first overdrive in steady driving for better fueleconomy, shifting down in higher-burden situations. But that's just my speculation.

Yes the Lepelletier gear set allows more gear ratios with less moving parts but also means no more 1:1 gear ratio. An interesting aside was the development of an Australian 6-speed auto that actually loads in to the previous 4-speed auto case - great grandson of the Borg Warner 35 transmission but now sadly owned by the Koreans. Here's a picture of ZF trans with good view of gear set.
