Rough idle and extended start

I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced somewhat of a rough idle. The rough idle is only on occasion. You can tell that it's not as smooth as normal. Also today for the first time my Escape had an "extended" start but eventually fired up. I have a Titanium Escape with the 2.0. Also I filled it up this afternoon and have been experiencing anywhere from 21-23 mpg and after I reset my 4 quadrant display I'm only getting like 15-16 mpg now....my escape only has like 2300 miles on it.

I've been consistently getting a rough idle ever since I bought it, though every now and then it goes away and runs smoothly. I keep asking for the dealership to updated the PCM calibration, but they haven't yet. I haven't had any start up issues though. As for MPG, first off, I'm a little jealous that you've been getting 21-23, but that aside, I've noticed that it takes awhile to equalize out to what I'm actually getting.

When you reset the average MPG, it seems to start at like the life time average, and then slowly work its way to what you're getting. I find this annoying because I'm typically on the highway for ~15min at a time, and I would like to see what type of highway mileage I'm getting, but by the time I get off, it's still increasing in MPGs. Also, when they updated the DIC software, it reset my "lifetime" average, and it started from like 30mpg. Perhaps yours is starting at like 15mpg (indicating that they idled it for an extended period of time before returning it to you?)

Given this theory only holds water if you've just had the DIC updated, and if you haven't put many miles on since you reset your 4 quadrant display.

haha...i have been reading all the bad reviews on fuel economy and i have been getting good gas mileage from the get go, but that might also be because i live in a city that doesn't have much traffic and i live about 20 minutes north of the city so most of my commute is highway. as far as the 4 quad display, my escape already had that software installed on it when i bought it, i have had it since day one of ownership. so maybe after i drive home it will get better mileage.

i need to take it back to the dealer soon because now it has started making a loud banging sound whenever i turn the steering wheel, like when im pulling out of a parking spot. and that just happened today about 45 minutes ago. so i might bring it up when i take it in. i sure hope nothing is going wrong with my car. that would suck to have just made the first payment and already have problems with it.

hmmm....i will have to test that theory on my next tank of gas....what i would like to use in my Escape exclusively would be the good ole gas without any ethanol in it. The only problem with that is the only gas station I can find in my area is about 10 miles out of my normal route to and from work....but i might just have to make myself go that way once a week....

I too havethis issue.Others here have complained about the front end noise as well. Its a front end thunking noise whenever the wheel is turned while moving.I've taken it to the dealer twice, first time dealer replaced the driver strut, second time they aligned and tweeked(so Im told). They still cant find the problem.

that sounds like the same thing that happened to a guy that i work with but he had a 2012 Mustang...he kept taking it back to the dealer and i think they eventually just replaced the whole front end and he never had another problem, they started buy saying it was normal, and then they replaced a few suspension components, and then they finally replaced the front end and never had another problem

I wonder if the turbo Escape engines like high octane gas. I know Ford hasn't spec'd high octane for their Ecoboost engines to keep operating costs low. Traditionally, higher compression turbo engines almost always used premium unleaded.

9.5:1 on a modern direct injection turbo it's really a high compression ratio. The 1.6 is 10.5:1 I believe. Increased performance from higher octane but I've never put regular in my Escape 2.0 since I purchased it

So I refueled with premium when my tank was empty, and have now used about 1/4 of the tank of premium. My idle feels the same. My mileage is the same. And I haven't bothered to floor it, but the drivability is the same. The only difference seems to be that it cost me 10% more to fill up.

I tow when upstate and regularly need to "pass" at times on the highway. You don't "need" premium but if you drive in what would fall under extreme conditions the premium I feel is worth it. Basically a dirt road on a 20% grade or so with about 3000lbs behind you wanting to roll back

I would like to re-visit ths and try to stay on topic. When I get in my wife's Honda, at a stoplight while in drive it is so smooth that you don't know it's running. My Escape on the other hand has all kind of vibrations that I feel through the brake pedal. When I put it in neutral most of the vibration/rough idle feeling goes away, but not all of it. Is this normal??

Yea. Mine has gotten worse as I continue to drive it. Today when I was sitting at a red light it almost felt like the motor was gonna conk out. It started to shudder but when I put it in neutral it smoothed right up. I have about 7700 miles on my escape now. I need to find time to take it back to the dealer.

Got a call from Ford Corp. the other day after I sent an email to their exec board about a bunch of things the rough idle being one. Told them the car at a stop light is very rough, my foot is vibrating a lot on the break etc and the dealer said they have replaced my motor mount twice. They were going to contact the dealer this week to figure out what is going on and get back to me. (next week) since I'm out of work for training all week.

How many revs is your motor turning when the idle is rough?? I noticed yesterday my Escape was idling a little higher, 900-1000 rpms, and it was a little smoother. When it is at its roughest idle, its turning about 750 rpms. Its still rough at any idle speed but I noticed that yesterday, not like the 2011 Accord that I had before the escape.

So I just had my car at the dealers to look at the rough idle issue again (after I brought it up with Ford Corp) - motor mount has been replaced twice. I even went on a road test with the tech. They basically said they felt the vibration issues I had (mostly on the steering wheel and the break pedal) and it seemed a little heavy but when they compared it to other 2013 Escapes they found the same thing. When they contacted Corporate regarding it, they were basically told it was normal. So anyways not really sure what I can do next......

That can't be right. I was sitting in the parking lot at work during the 3.6.2 download process and mine was idling so smooth and quiet, I had to check to make sure it was still running. I'm not mentioning this for any other reason other than excess vibration and rough idle is not normal.

Yes, but were you in "D", drive?? Mine is only rough when I am stopped and in drive. If I put it in N or P it gets much smoother. My Honda is smooth no matter what the transmission is in. Second, when I shift from drive to reverse to vice versa it seems to take too long to engage. Third, at highway speeds, when I go to pass someone or floor it there is a disconcerting pause before it kicks in. Doesn't seem to be any TSB that really addresses these issues. I would like to just get a re-flash of the PCM, just to see if that makes a difference. But I haven't asked my dealer if they would do it. I doubt it.

have you looked at tsb 13-7-5?

Yes, but I hooked up my OBDII scanner the other day and I have no DTC's, no Engine Fault - Serice Engine Now indicators. My engine light has never come on and my vehicle health reports are good. The way I read the TSB, it sounds like some trouble indicator should come on at some point. What do you think?

You need to take your car in to Ted Britt and let them look at it. Who is your service advisor over there? I would ask to talk to Gary Funk (who just got promoted to the service manager) I talked to him about it the other day, I think the more people that mention it to him the better.

OK, yep, I have none of those issues, my car idles fine, shifts fine and doesn't hesitate when I need it to go. I hope you don't have a lemon. Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

Yep, 10-4. And I'm glad Gary is in and Steve is out.

Guys I have a 2013 Ford Escape with the 2.0 liter Eco Boost and am having the same rough idle issue. I am no mechanic or automotive specialist but with the rough idle that I'm experiencing and everyone else seems to agree with, I would say it is probably a clutch problem. My car also vibrates pretty bad when I take an extended amount of time to stop, sometimes even getting some torque bursts. Not sure if anyone else is seeing that as well. Just my 2 cents
