calypsocoral
I thought the 3.5 was supposed to get better mileage? It's worse. In this particular application, the Cyclone V6 is hauling a two-ton SUV. Not exactly conducive to good fuel economy. Check out its mileage in the Lincoln Mark Z. That would be a much better indication. Btw, that's better fuel economy than the Duratec 30 in the Ford Escape-- a smaller vehicle! Calypso - I wish you were right - but this IS the MarkZ - the fusion cousin .... not the MKX SUV. And yo uare right about the Escape, but that vehicles still uses 4speed Auto, which is likely the root cause of the low mileage. 92merc
I noticed something odd. If you look at the MKZ, it shows the HP as 263. But if you check the MKX, it's at 265. Why would that be?? Personally, I was hoping for closer to 20/30 for MPG on this engine. With the Edge coming in at almost a 1000lbs heavier, I don't know how it would get "better" than the MKZ. The wife and I really really want this Edge, but the MPG is a dissappointment if it comes in at this level. After talking about it, we've still decided we want the Edge enough in spite of this. And we've been comparing everything Ford from Focus, Fusion, 500, and Grand Marquis. The Edge still fits what we want most. I guess MPG ends up being third priority after style and versatility. I just hope the ride is good, otherwise we'll be back to thinking again...
igor
a couple of HP differences beween applications usually result from exhaust and intake routing ... both MKZ and MKX/Edge have single exhaust (with dual tip), but there is a chance the routing in MKX/Edge is less restrictive. Now - if they made a car that can handle a true double exhaust, you could see some 5-15hp jump. Igor
silvrsvt
I also thought I read that the EPA was supposed to change its testing methodology in 2007, the slightly lower numbers in the MKZ might be an incidation of this...

I heard that, too. So, it will be interesting to see if this holds up when the competition releases their 2007 numbers...
92merc
According to what I'm reading, it says the EPA changes won't affect 2007 cars. It starts with 2008 Model Year cars. Not that Ford couldn't be using that method already. http://www.epa.gov/fueleconomy/420f06009.htm http://yosemite.epa.gov/opa/admpress.nsf/a...33;OpenDocument
silvrsvt
Well for those who are wondering..the Zephyr only got 20/28 and you have to figure that AWD loses about 1-2 MPG as an option. I think I can live with a loss of an MPG for an extra 45 HP :D
FStephenMasek
My estimate is 18 city and 26 highway for the FWD Edge and 17 city and 25 highway for the AWD Edge. The MKX weighs more, so will probably be rated one MPG less. With production starting in one month, the real figures should eb out soon. Igor I believe the reason for the Escape's lower mileage isn't the transmision but the aerodynamics.
