bec5150
Ok, so they are admitting they have quality problems and are taking steps to address them. Imagine how much different our auto industry would be if GM and Ford would have done this about 1986. That being said, I wonder if Toyota is so big right now that they may NEVER reach the level of quality they have in the past. Big companies just get so political and efficiency and quality suffer, and it doesn't matter what company it is.

Last I checked, Honda hasn't admitted they have a design issue with the location of their oil filter on their Combustible Reusedbeercan Vehicle (aka CRV). Guess we'll have to wait until hell freezes over. THIS IS A NON ISSUE
jlsaylor
Ok, so they are admitting they have quality problems and are taking steps to address them. Imagine how much different our auto industry would be if GM and Ford would have done this about 1986. That being said, I wonder if Toyota is so big right now that they may NEVER reach the level of quality they have in the past. Big companies just get so political and efficiency and quality suffer, and it doesn't matter what company it is. Toyota was having serious quality issues when I still worked with them ten years ago. Of course, back then their reputation was still such that if you claimed the same you obviously didn't understand how marvelous Toyota's were. Never mind that I daily had personal involvement with the development and manufacture of more Toyota's than most Toyota enthusiasts could shake a stick at. The difference is the problems have gotten so bad that they can no longer simply ignore them. And I would bet dollars to ding-dongs that the problems are still worse than perception indicates. I have stated for a long time that there were problems at Toyota and that they were on their way to becoming the new GM in more respects than simple volume. Ten years ago people discounted me because I was imagining problems that simply couldn't exist........now I'm simply over-reacting to minor quality hickups (that one always makes me laugh) according to these same people. Wonder what these people will say I'm doing when the myth of Toyota quality is gone altogether? Toyta is not trying to fix these problems so much as they are trying to control the damage public recognition of these problems is creating. Hmm, sounds suspiciously like GM about 25-30 years ago doesn't it? Edited October 1, 2006 by jlsaylor

Great job, thanks. I too have sold some people on Fords, and Gm. Most of them would of purchased a domestic anyway, but 2 were previous honda and toyoda owners. YESSSS!!! And all have been issue free :happy feet:
ebritt
My 03 Cavalier LS Sport has 50k miles and absolutely no problems, even still got the factory tires. So tell me again "bec", why do I have to buy a Honda or Toyota???
bec5150
I don't think you will find ANY of my threads that tell anyone to buy a Honda or Toyota. Go ahead, go read, and come back with one that says you have to buy a Honda or Toyota. I have freely stated that buying an American Honda is better for American than buying a Mexican Fusion, but that's not because it's a Honda so much as because it's American. You would be very enlightened if you would just read my posts before calling me out as a Japanese lover. Finally, I am a firm believer that if you buy a car and you are happy with it, great, and I don't care if it's Ovaltine's Kia, your Chevy, my Ford, or my wife's Honda. We all bought what we bought for a reason. There was something we liked better about the one we bought. You will notice this "labeling" that you and others do is isolated to you guys. I don't label anyone on this board as a "Ford Lover" or "Korean Lover" or anything else like that. I figure if you got a point, you got a fact, make it. Like I'll make now. I don't think you should be bragging about reliability until you reach 100K or more. A modern car should make it to 100K with no issues, and 200K with very few. Wouldn't you agree that 50K is nothing to brag about?
hoss96racing
well ebritt good luck to ya... my cavalier is doing well ... just rolled over 145K... if I don't get over 200K I will be dissapointed... but I can't expect more then that... the engine and tranny are looking good but the michigan winters are taking there toll... the doors are starting to bubble and I just noticed surface rust coming from behind the rocker cover... only regular maintance... B) rust kills cars before there time.. my dads tempo became to rotted at around 170K... my brothers escort became unsafe at around 250K ... my family has little trouble getting vehicles past the 150k mark

I beleive that a Honda or Toyota will fair no better with the same amount of maintenance. If you got the ecotec 200k should be no problem, but the old 2.2 had a tendency to corrode the head gaskets and freeze plugs. I replaced all of them on my old 91 LS wagon when I pulled the motor for a bad flexplate. It had 145k when I gave it to my sister-in-law. It's still going. Ive had several escorts, 91, 2 93's and a 95 Tracer Trio. All good little cars. Edited October 14, 2006 by ebritt
