American Automakers Less Profitable Per Vehicle

Recommended Posts

A new study digs deeper into the reasons why American automakers earn less profit per vehicle than their rivals. The Dow Jones newswires carried word from the latest Harbour-Felax report showing that the American brands make an average of $2400 per vehicle less than the three largest Japanese automakers. However, the study points out that restructurings at the American companies are already showing an effect on the gap between the domestics and the Asian automakers - even while those Asian automakers are enjoying lower warranty and pension costs. Healthcare is another big cost for American automakers; Toyota spends $900 to $1400 less per vehicle on average in healthcare costs than do GM, Ford, and Chrysler.

The notion that Asian car companies are more efficient than the big 3 is really a myth to me. The difference, according to the article, was about $2400 advantage. However, if you remove the $1400 health care payout and whatever the pension costs are, the gap narrows considerably. Do the Asians get interest free loans as well?
