Ford Jellymoulds
FORD STRENGTHENS EUROPEAN MARKET SHARE IN 2008, BECOMES SECOND BEST-SELLING BRAND In 2008, Ford of Europe increased its full year market share by 0.1 percentage points to 8.6 percent versus 2007 New Fiesta was best-selling model in the UK in November and December, and is already second best-selling Ford model in Europe Link... jobu37
I wonder if GM had some new models come out in December or did they make a marketshare move via fire-sale tactics. The reason that I ask is because they have been bleeding mareket share all year and especially for the prior 3 months then all of the sudden they outsell Ford in December. It would be totally unlike GM to do something like that. The real positive news this month and all year is that Toyota is quickly become an also-ran in the European market as is Honda. Mazda had been running neck and neck with Honda through November then Honda pulled away in December.
RichardJensen
Gee. Remember when Ford used to be the number one mfr. in Europe? I do. But they gambled and lost on the Scorpio & Sierra, and they let the Fiesta & Escort become absurdly, laughably, irritatingly, frustratingly, obnoxiously, disgustingly outdated before they were replaced. Heck, Ford so totally screwed up the Escort that they had to kill the name.
LSFan00
In what year was the Escort considered a great car? I honestly don't have any idea...
RichardJensen
In what year was the Escort considered a great car? I honestly don't have any idea... The EUROPEAN Escort was the backbone of Ford's car lineup in the 70s and 80s. The assumption made there was that 'heck, it's a popular car, why should we update it?' bifs66
In what year was the Escort considered a great car? I honestly don't have any idea... I don't know what others think about Escorts; but IMO, the 91 Escort GT (Mazda based) that we bought new was one great, useful, tough, and (mostl of all) fun car. It has been handed down through the family now, and is still going strong. The other Escort we owned was an 1984 model and it left a lot to be desired; however, it was reliable (if nothing else). But what other brands does GM sell in Europe? A couple thousand Cadillacs all year and a handful of Corvettes. And then there's Vauxhall, but that's in place of Opel, not in addition to it. If you sold a Vauxhall in Germany the crouts would not touch it If you sold a Opel in the UK the Brits would not touch it with a bargepole with a crout badge on the grille French won't touch either. Why wouldn't they though? I mean they have to know they are the exact same cars with the steering wheel on the opposite side. Or do they not know that? As for the French, who cares what they think?
twintornados
The assumption made there was that 'heck, it's a popular car, why should we update it?' That line of thinking is what damned the Taurus to rental fleet queen....with Alan Mulally in charge, hopefully...that line of thinking has gone the way of the flathead V8 and Torque Tube drive shaft. They do? I always figured Vauxhall was in place of Opel in the UK. If what you say is true....WTF is the point of Vauxhall at all? You could easily replace the word "Vauxhall" with Mercury in the US market...I hope the "new plan" for Mercury is coming soon....

Heck, Ford so totally screwed up the Escort that they had to kill the name. You're dead right Richard Ford did screw up with Sierra they lost a massive amount of market share but to be fair sales did get better towards the end of its life but no where even close to what the Cortina used to sell. Scorpio and the very last generation Escort apart from the cossie version were the worse cars FOE very produced, the last Escort was built by bean counters designing it. It showed everything in it was cheap and nasty about it, anything that could be made smaller was, anything that could be made from plastic was, if a seat bolster was 3" thick the bean counters wanted made 1" thick the last Escort handled worse than the model that came before it. Lesson to Ford keep bean counters away from car design. Early Escorts that you never got in the US were one the best cars in Europe in their day, but they fuel efficient & cheap to assemble FWD cars seemed to be the way to go as we got taxed to death with high fuel prices. Ford's old RWD Escorts are still picking up awards, l watched a TV show on the worlds top 10 greatest rally cars of all time the Focus RS made it to No10 spot in the charts made up of mainly modern cars but the No1 was Ford's RWD Escorts as voted for by the British Rally forum that is the biggest rally forum in the world only the Scandinavians like rallying more than we do. And GM is saying they're gonna cut back on the brands, and yet they're keeping GMC and Chevy. If they just got rid of GMC, or instead stopped making Chevy trucks, then they could probably finally steal that number 1 spot from the F-150. We still buy lots of other German cars though BMW & VW, Ford used to be the same but not so bad we had the Cortina in the UK, Germany had the Taunus, we used to build our own Capri's & Germany built it's own Capri's but the same car. FOE sorted out the mess and became a one car company, GM have still not sorted their mess out yet.
