AACoPD05
I have a 2008 MKZ with only 27k on it. Three times now I've had an issued where when I try to start it it just cranks and doesn't start. If I turn the key off and try again it starts right up. Theres no rhyme or reason to it. It did it once, then went months with it being ok, then it did it again. Some time passed and it did it again today. There is no check engine light. The car does have factory installed remote start, but the no start issue only seems to do it when using the key in the ignition. The car runs perfect other then this occasional no start problem.Any thoughts?
akirby
The common theory is the pistons/crank end up in a dead spot. It's random and doesn't hurt anything. I don't think there was a fix for it but not 100% sure.
fordmantpw
Our Flex has done that 5 or 6 times in it's 75k miles of life. Strange. Freaks my wife out, but other than that, doesn't seem to hurt anything.
AACoPD05
Thanks for the info, glad I'm not alone. Do these cars have a crank position sensor? If so would it be worth looking at that?
akirby
Yes - I think that's part of it.
AACoPD05
Looks like it has a camshaft position sensor and a crank shaft position sensor. Which would be most likely the issue?
akirby
It's not a defective part. It's some combination of where the pistons and the sensor stop and the software that controls it all, which is why it's random. It's a timing issue and it can't really be fixed. theoldwizard
Does your engine have "One Touch Start" (i.e. the engine will continue to crank after the key is released from the START position) ? This feature was added to almost all engines (it is a software feature) about that time and is designed to solve these "longer than average" crank issues. Even with OTS, no starts still rarely occur. AACoPD05
Yes it does. In fact now that you mention it each no start incident occurred while the vehicle was cranking on its own without my hand on the key. Is there something with this system I should be looking at, such as a software upgrade?
akirby
That's not a cause - it's just a symptom. You don't normally notice it because it usually starts right away. When it doesn't start right away it keeps cranking so you notice it.
